The Very Best Sloppy Joe You'll Ever Have image

I just can't understand why most people spoon some sloppy joe meat onto a bun and call it a day... what the heck?? Around here, our locally-owned shops make them just like you would a sub... lots and lots of fresh veggies and melty provolone cheese all on a fresh, home-style, Italian loaf of bread. So, don't settle for Manwich...

Number Of Ingredients 21

1 lb lean ground beef
1/2 large onion, chopped
1 stalk(s) celery, chopped
1/2 medium green pepper, diced
SAUCE:
1 c ketchup
1/4 c water
2-4 Tbsp brown sugar, depending on your preference
2 tsp worcestershire sauce
2 tsp yellow mustard
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp salt or to taste
freshly cracked pepper, to taste
TOPPINGS & BREAD:
finely shredded lettuce
thin, red onion cut into rings
dill pickle slices
thinly sliced tomatoes
provolone or white american cheese
1 loaf italian or french bread

Steps:

  • 1. Brown ground beef, onion, celery and green pepper. Drain grease, if necessary.
  • 2. Add rest of sauce ingredients. Simmer for 40 minutes on low.
  • 3. Slice Italian bread into serving size, approximately 6" or so. Top with meat mixture and then cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions.
