This cake is similar to a pound cake and should be served without icing. Aging improves the flavor and it is best when two or three days old.

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 cups cake flour, sifted
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
5 egg yolks
2 egg whites
3/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Sift flour once, measure. Add baking powder and salt and sift three times.
  • Cream shortening, gradually adding sugar. Cream thoroughly.
  • Add egg yolks and unbeaten egg whites. Beat 1 minute. Combine flour mixture and milk alternately with creamed mixture.
  • Beat very well. Add flavoring.
  • Pour into greased springform pan with tube inset.
  • Bake 1 hour and 20 minutes in moderate oven, 325 to 350 degrees.
  • To remove cake, push down on tapered clamp and release spring rim.

A Family recipe that is a must have for Tripodi & Violi family gatherings. This cake is a heavy chocolate cake with a cooked icing. You'll love it!

1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups flour
1/2 cup hot water
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups milk
6 teaspoons flour
2 eggs
2 cups margarine
2 teaspoons vanilla

Steps:

  • Begin with the frosting.
  • In a 2-3 Quart saucepan place 1 1/2 cup sugar, 6 tsp flour, 1 1/2 cup milk and 2 beaten eggs. Cook over medium heat stiring constantly with a wisk until mixture reaches a pudding texture. Let cool and put the pan in the regrigerator.
  • Cake:.
  • Put 1 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup cocoa in mixing bowl and mix well.
  • Add 1/2 cup shortening and 2 well beaten eggs and continue mixing.
  • Add 1/4 tsp salt, 1 tsp vanilla,.
  • Aternately mix in 1 cup buttermilk, 2 cups flour until blended (don't over mix).
  • Add 1/2 cup hot water and 1 tsp baking soda.
  • Beat well and pour in greased and floured cake pans.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 35 - 40 min until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Allow cake to cool completely.
  • Bring back the icing pan and in mixer bowl add 4 sticks of margerine and 2 tsp vanilla.
  • Whip up to the consistance of icing and apply to cake.
