Classic Goulash image

Easy recipe for making a classic goulash. Can also be done in a slow cooker. Inspired by Paula Deen's Bobby's Goulash.

Time 1h20m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 pounds lean ground beef
2 large yellow onions, chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
3 cups water
2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
2 (14.5 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
3 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons dried Italian herb seasoning
3 bay leaves
1 tablespoon seasoned salt, or to taste
2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni

Steps:

  • Cook and stir the ground beef in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat, breaking the meat up as it cooks, until the meat is no longer pink and has started to brown, about 10 minutes. Skim off excess fat, and stir in the onions and garlic. Cook and stir the meat mixture until the onions are translucent, about 10 more minutes.
  • Stir water, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, soy sauce, Italian seasoning, bay leaves, and seasoned salt into the meat mixture and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Stir macaroni into the mixture, cover, and simmer over low heat until the pasta is tender, about 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, discard bay leaves, and serve.

BOBBY'S GOULASH

Bobby's Goulash image

This is a Paula Deen recipe from Good Housekeeping magazine. I scribbled it down in the doctor's office on the back of a receipt and it looks really good.

Time 1h

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 lbs ground beef
2 large yellow onions
3 garlic cloves
3 cups water
2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
2 (14 1/2 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
3 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons italian seasoning
3 bay leaves
1 tablespoon paula's house seasoning (or 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder & 1/2 t. black pepper)
1 tablespoon seasoning salt
2 cups uncooked macaroni

Steps:

  • Cook the beef, drain.
  • Add onions and garlic. Saute for about 10 minutes.
  • Stir in everything else BUT the macaroni.
  • Heat to boiling, simmer 20 minutes.
  • Stir in macaroni, heat to boiling. Simmer 20 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and let sit for 30 minutes.
  • I'd be curious to see if the macaroni got overdone with these cooking/sitting times. I think that I'd check it after that last 20 minute simmer. Also, I'm not sure about the measurements for the alternative house seasoning. That's what the magazine said, but I bet it will need more than 1/2 teaspoons of each.

3 cloves garlic, chopped
3 cups water
2 (15 oz) cans tomato sauce
2 (15 oz) cans diced tomatoes
2 tablespoons Italian seasoning (I didn't use this)
3 bay leaves (I didn't use this either)
3 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp Paula Deen's House Seasoning (Again, didn't use this in mine)
1 tbsp salt
2 cups elbow macaroni
I added garlic powder, seasoning salt, and a little pepper to mine. -

Steps:

  • In large pot, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned, spoon off any extra grease. Add onion and garlic, saute until transparent. Add 3 cups of water, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, all seasonings, soy sauce, and bay leaves (if you choose to use them). Allow to simmer for 15-20 minutes. Add macaroni and allow to simmer an additional 20 minutes or until tender. Remove bay leaves before serving
