BBQ Lentil Sloppy Joes image

Quick homemade barbecue sauce gives these lentil sloppy joes a ton of flavor. You can also substitute 1 1/2 cups of your favorite bottled barbecue sauce plus 1/4 cup water.

1 cup green or brown lentils
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 onion (diced)
1 green bell pepper (diced)
3/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce*
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
4 hamburger buns
4 slices GO VEGGIE Vegan Cheddar Flavor Singles

Steps:

  • Add the lentils and two cups of water to a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cover and cook 25 minutes, or until the water is absorbed and the lentils begin to soften.
  • Meanwhile, heat the oil in another pan. Add the onion and bell pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes, or until softened. add the ketchup, vinegar, water, syrup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and cayenne pepper. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer.
  • Add the partially cooked lentils to the sauce and simmer 10 minutes, or until soft. Adjust cayenne, salt, and pepper to taste.
  • Divide the lentils among the rolls; top each with a GO VEGGIE cheddar single.

2 tablespoons ground allspice
2 cloves garlic, minced, or more to taste

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion; cook and stir until soft and browned, about 10 minutes. Add lentils, tomatoes, barbeque sauce, ketchup, miso paste, shiitake mushrooms, allspice, and garlic; cook and stir until flavors combine and mixture thickens, 20 to 25 minutes.

¼ cup vegetable oil
½ cup minced onion
2 (8 ounce) packages tempeh
½ cup minced green bell pepper
2 cloves garlic, minced
¼ cup tomato sauce
1 tablespoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon blackstrap molasses
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
¼ teaspoon celery seed
¼ teaspoon ground cumin
¼ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground coriander
½ teaspoon dried thyme
½ teaspoon oregano
½ teaspoon paprika
1 pinch ground black pepper
hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a deep, 10-inch skillet over medium-low heat. Cook the onion in the oil until translucent. Crumble the tempeh into the skillet; cook and stir until golden brown. Add the green pepper and garlic; cook another 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, honey, molasses, cayenne pepper, celery seed, cumin, salt, coriander, thyme, oregano, paprika, and black pepper; stir. Simmer another 10 to 15 minutes. Spoon hot onto hamburger buns to serve.

1 pound frozen Tater Tots (about 5 cups)
1 tablespoon plus 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1 14-ounce package extra-firm tofu, drained
2/3 cup ketchup
1/3 cup chili sauce (such as Heinz)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 onion, chopped
1 stalk celery, chopped
1 carrot, chopped
4 hamburger buns, split
4 slices white cheddar cheese
Bread-and-butter pickles, for topping

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven and bake the Tater Tots as the label directs. Toss with 1/2 teaspoon chili powder and 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder; season with salt and pepper.
  • Meanwhile, crumble the tofu on a paper towel-lined plate. Mix the ketchup and chili sauce in a bowl. Set aside.
  • Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion, celery, carrot and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring, 3 minutes. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon chili powder and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder. Cook, stirring, 1 minute. Add the tofu, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper. Cook, stirring, 3 minutes. Add 3/4 cup of the ketchup sauce and 1/3 cup water; simmer until thickened, 2 minutes.
  • Place the bottom buns on a baking sheet. Top with the tofu mixture, the remaining ketchup sauce and the cheese. Bake until the cheese melts, 3 minutes. Add the pickles and top buns. Serve with the Tater Tots.

1 (10 ounce) bag frozen mixed vegetables (BirdsEye peppers and onions)
4 minced garlic cloves
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 cup ketchup
1 cup textured vegetable protein
vegetable bouillon cube
hot sauce (optional)
1 tablespoon Braggs liquid aminos (use soy sauce if you don't have it)
oil (for frying)

Steps:

  • Cook vegies& garlic in a little oil till tender.
  • Add paste, ketchup, sugar, Braggs, hot sauce and enough water to thin sauce a little.
  • Cook a few minutes, then set aside.
  • Cook TVP and bullion in enough water to cover a few minutes.
  • Drain, then fry TVP in a little oil for 5-10 minutes.
  • Mix with sauce and cook about 3-5 minutes.
  • Adjust seasonings to your taste.
  • Serve on rolls, tortillas, etc.
