APPLE SPICE COOKIES

Apple Spice Cookies image

Provided by Wanna Make This?

Categories     dessert

Time 40m

Yield 10 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 large egg, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon apple pie spice
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 to 2 small apples, cored and cut into thin rounds (about 1/8-inch thick)
1/4 cup gold sanding sugar or coarse sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Place the butter and brown sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and beat until combined, about 2 minutes. Add the maple syrup, vanilla and egg. Beat on medium speed until homogenous, about 1 minute more.
  • Whisk together the flour, apple pie spice, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl. Pour half of the dry ingredients into the butter mixture and beat on low speed until combined. Repeat with the remaining dry ingredients until a loose, wet dough comes together. Allow the dough to rest for about 10 minutes in the refrigerator; it will thicken slightly as the flour becomes hydrated.
  • Using a 3-tablespoon size scoop, make large mounds of dough on the prepared baking sheets, leaving at least 3 inches of space between each cookie. Place an apple ring on top of each mound and press gently down to secure. Generously sprinkle each apple slice with sanding sugar.
  • Bake the cookies until deeply golden brown, about 15 minutes, rotating the tray halfway through the baking time. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before moving to a wire rack.

CARROT APPLE SPICE COOKIES

Carrot Apple Spice Cookies image

These were a happy accident! I didn't have enough carrots so I had to use shredded apple. They turned out delish. In between a cookie and a scone. Soft and cake like. Plus-your house will smell delightful!!

Provided by huneybee327

Categories     Drop Cookies

Time 35m

Yield 18-20 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 pinch of grated nutmeg
3/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup light brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup shredded carrot (about 3, peeled and trimmed)
1/2 cup apple, shredded (with or without peel. I used gala with peel, but whatever you have is fine)
1 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup coarsely chopped pecans (optional)

Steps:

  • Position oven racks in the upper-middle and lower-middle positions and preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  • Whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • With a stand or hand mixer, beat the butter on medium speed until creamy and smooth. Add the sugars and beat until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes, then add the egg and beat for another minute. Reduce the mixer speed to low and beat in the vanilla. Continuing on low speed, add the flour mixture in 2 or 3 batches and beat only until they just disappear into the mix. The dough will be very thick, but don't overbeat to incorporate the flour. Using a rubber spatula, mix in the carrots, apples, cranberries and pecans.
  • Spoon about three heaping tablespoonfuls of dough (or use a large cookie scoop, which is what I did) onto the prepared baking sheets at a time, leaving about an inch of space between them. Using your fingers, every so slightly flatted the tops of the cookies.
  • Bake for 16 to 18 minutes, rotating the sheets from top to bottom and front to back at the midway point. The cookies should be light brown and only just firm on top. Carefully transfer the cookies to racks to cool to room temperature. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

What are Apple Spice Cookies?

Apple spice cookies are a type of cookie that is typically made with a combination of flour, sugar, butter, applesauce, and spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice. These cookies have a slightly soft, chewy texture and a warm, comforting flavor that's perfect for the fall season.

History of Apple Spice Cookies

The history of apple spice cookies is a little murky, but it's likely that these cookies have roots in traditional American baking. Apples have been a popular ingredient in American baking for centuries, and spices like cinnamon and nutmeg were commonly used in colonial kitchens. Over time, these spices became associated with fall flavors like pumpkin, apple, and gingerbread, and apple spice cookies became a beloved autumn treat.

Health Benefits of Apple Spice Cookies

While apple spice cookies are still a sweet, indulgent treat, they do have some health benefits because they include apples and spices. Apples are a good source of fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, which can support digestive health, heart health, and immune function. Spices like cinnamon and ginger have also been linked to health benefits like improved blood sugar control, reduced inflammation, and improved brain function. So, while an apple spice cookie is still a dessert, it's a slightly healthier option than some other cookies or sweets.

Variations on Apple Spice Cookies

There are many variations on the classic apple spice cookie recipe, each with their own unique twist. Here are a few popular variations:

Apple Spice Oatmeal Cookies:

This variation adds oats to the cookie dough for a heartier, more filling cookie. The oats also add a chewy texture and a nutty flavor that complements the spices and apples.

Apple Spice Snickerdoodles:

This variation combines the flavors of apple spice with the classic snickerdoodle cookie, which is rolled in cinnamon sugar before baking. The result is a cookie with a slightly crisp exterior and a soft, chewy interior that's bursting with apple spice flavor.

Apple Cider Spice Cookies:

This variation uses apple cider instead of applesauce to add more apple flavor to the cookies. The cider also adds a tangy, slightly acidic flavor that balances out the sweetness of the cookie dough.

Apple Spice Thumbprint Cookies:

This variation uses a different method of shaping the cookies, with each cookie ball being pressed down in the center with a thumb or the back of a spoon. A dollop of apple butter or apple jelly is then placed in the center of each cookie before baking, creating a sweet and fruity filling that pairs perfectly with the apple spice flavors.

Serving and Pairing Apple Spice Cookies

Apple spice cookies are a versatile treat that can be enjoyed in many different ways. Here are a few ideas for serving and pairing these cookies:

With a Cup of Tea:

When it comes to making cookies, apple spice cookies are a delicious and festive option for any occasion. These cookies are perfect for fall and winter, as they incorporate the warm, comforting flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves with the subtle sweetness of apples. However, baking apple spice cookies can be a bit tricky, and it's important to follow certain tips and tricks to ensure that your cookies turn out perfectly. In this article, we'll explore some of the most valuable tips for making apple spice cookies.

Tip #1: Use Fresh Ingredients

One of the most important tips when making apple spice cookies is to use fresh, high-quality ingredients. This includes fresh apples, which should be firm and ripe. When choosing apples for your cookies, look for varieties that are sweet and tart, such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith. Avoid using apples that are too soft or mealy, as they won't hold up well in the cookie dough. In addition to fresh apples, be sure to use fresh spices as well. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves lose their potency over time, so it's a good idea to replace your spices every six months or so. You can also buy whole spices and grind them yourself for maximum freshness.

Tip #2: Properly Measure Your Ingredients

Measuring your ingredients properly is essential when making apple spice cookies. Inaccurate measurements can throw off the balance of flavor and texture, resulting in cookies that are either too dry or too moist. To measure your ingredients accurately, use a kitchen scale and measure by weight rather than volume. This is particularly important when it comes to flour, as a cup of flour can vary in weight depending on how it's packed. If you don't have a kitchen scale, use the scoop-and-level method for measuring flour, which involves using a spoon to scoop flour into a measuring cup and then leveling off the excess with a straight edge.

Tip #3: Chill the Dough

Chilling the dough before baking is another important step in making apple spice cookies. Chilling helps the dough firm up, which makes it easier to handle and results in cookies that spread less during baking. To chill the dough, first shape it into a disc or rectangle and wrap it tightly in plastic wrap. Then, refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight. If you're in a hurry, you can also place the dough in the freezer for 10-15 minutes.

Tip #4: Use Parchment Paper

Using parchment paper when baking apple spice cookies can make all the difference in the world. Parchment paper prevents the cookies from sticking to the baking sheet, which makes them much easier to remove without breaking. To use parchment paper, simply line your baking sheet with a sheet of parchment paper before placing the cookies on it. This will also make clean-up a breeze, as you can simply discard the parchment paper after baking.

Tip #5: Don't Overbake

Overbaking is a common mistake when it comes to making apple spice cookies. Since these cookies are already quite dry due to the apples, it's important not to bake them for too long, or they'll become hard and crumbly. To ensure that your cookies come out perfectly, set a timer and check them a few minutes before they're supposed to be done. The cookies should be slightly golden on the edges and set in the middle but still slightly soft to the touch. Remember, cookies continue to bake for a few minutes after they come out of the oven, so it's better to take them out a little early than a little late.

Tip #6: Add Extra Flavorings

To take your apple spice cookies to the next level, consider adding some extra flavorings to the dough. For example, you could add a tablespoon of orange zest for a citrusy twist or a tablespoon of molasses for a deeper, caramel-like flavor. You could also add some chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, for a bit of crunch and texture. Alternatively, you could add some dried cranberries or raisins for a sweet and chewy addition.

Tip #7: Store Them Properly

Finally, it's important to store your apple spice cookies properly to ensure that they stay fresh and delicious. Once the cookies have cooled completely, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. If you want to keep them even longer, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. When freezing cookies, be sure to wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and place them in a freezer-safe container. To thaw frozen cookies, simply leave them at room temperature for an hour or two before serving.

Conclusion

Making apple spice cookies can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it's important to follow these valuable tips to ensure that your cookies turn out perfectly. Remember to use fresh ingredients, measure your ingredients properly, chill the dough, use parchment paper, don't overbake, add extra flavorings, and store them properly. With these tips in mind, you're sure to create delicious, comforting cookies that are perfect for any occasion.
