1 box Milk Chocolate Cake Mix
1 1/2 cups chocolate malted milk powder, divided
1 cup water
1/2 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs
1 tub (8 oz.) whipped topping (like Cool Whip)
1 cup Whoppers malted milk balls

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350F degrees Spray 13x9 baking pan with nonstick cooking spray with flour In a medium bowl, combine cake mix with 3/4 cups malted milk powder. Add in eggs, oil and water and stir until combined. Pour batter in baking pan. Bake for about 38-40 minutes (until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean) Allow cake to cool completely before making topping. For the topping In a medium bowl, combine whipped topping with 3/4 cup malted milk powder. Stir until completely incorporated and no longer grainy. Spread topping on top of cooled cake. Put one cup of malted milk balls into a ziploc bag and zip it up. Pound with a rolling pin (or other hard object) to crush Whoppers. Sprinkle finished cake with crushed malted milk balls. Do you need a chocolate fix? This will do the trick. The chopped Whopper malted milk candies melt into the the cake while it's cooking and boy oh boy it makes for a great cake. Chocolaty with a light caramel flavor Enjoy!

FOR CAKE:
1 cup(s) all purpose flour
1 cup(s) sugar
1/2 teaspoon(s) baking soda
1/8 teaspoon(s) salt
1/2 cup(s) butter
1/6 cup(s) cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon(s) fresh grated cinnamon, i use a microplane
1 - egg
1/4 cup(s) buttermilk
1 teaspoon(s) vanilla
1/2 cup(s) whopper malted milk candies, chopped
FOR CHOCOLATE GLAZE:
1/8 cup(s) butter
1 1/2 tablespoon(s) cocoa powder
1 1/2 tablespoon(s) buttermilk
1 cup(s) powdered sugar - heaping cup
1/4 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a saucepan add butter, cocoa powder, and 1/2 cup water. Bring mixture to a boil. Turn off heat and allow to cool slightly.
  • In a mixing bowl combine flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
  • In a measuring cup combine buttermilk, vanilla extract, and egg. Whisk to combine.
  • Pour cocoa mixture into flour mixture and mix on low. Add buttermilk mixture and mix to combine thoroughly. Stir in chopped whoppers. The batter will be thin.
  • Pour into prepared 9 x 9 baking pan. Bake 25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Let cool while making buttermilk chocolate glaze.
  • For Glaze: In saucepan combine butter, cocoa, and buttermilk. Bring to a boil and remove from heat. Add vanilla extract and powdered sugar. Stir with a whisk until smooth. Pour over cake. Allow to set before serving. Serve warm or cooled - it's great either way.
