Old Fashioned Apple Crisp image

I was first introduced to Apple Crisp when I was a young girl in school. I always loved it, but it wasn't until I got married that I learned how to make it. My mom told me how to season the apples and make the basic crumb topping that goes with so many desserts. It's also wonderful on sweet potato casserole. I hope you enjoy this simple dessert that's perfect in the fall when fresh, local apples are abundant.

Number Of Ingredients 12

8-10 medium granny smith apples
1/2 cup(s) sugar or artificial sweetener (i used splenda)
1 dash(es) salt
1 teaspoon(s) cinnamon or to taste
1/4 teaspoon(s) allspice
1 pinch(es) nutmeg
TOPPING
1 cup(s) all purpose flour (may need a little more)
1 stick(s) butter, slightly softened
1/2 cup(s) brown sugar, lightly packed
1/2 cup(s) sugar
1 dash(es) salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray and 8 X 8 baking dish with cooking spray, set aside.
  • Peel and cut apples into slices (they don't have to be uniform). Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Place into prepared baking dish.
  • Prepare topping and sprinkle evenly over apples and bake at 375 degrees for about 30 minutes or until golden and apples are bubbly. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.
  • TOPPING: In a small bowl, mix flour, salt and sugar. Cut in butter using pastry method until mixture resembles a coarse meal. You may also work in with fingers. Mixture should be about the consistency of wet sand. If it's too wet, add just a little more flour. Sprinkle on top of apples.
