1 cup margarine
1 ½ cups white sugar
1 cup sour cream
2 eggs
3 tablespoons grated orange zest
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
⅔ cup orange juice
¼ cup margarine, melted
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
3 tablespoons orange juice

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • In a medium bowl, cream together the margarine, sugar and sour cream until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in 3 tablespoons orange zest. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir into the sugar mixture alternately with 2/3 cup orange juice. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely. In a small bowl, stir together the melted margarine, confectioners' sugar and 1 tablespoon orange zest. Mix remaining orange juice in 1 tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. Spread over cooled cookies.

1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1/2 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
ICING:
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons butter, melted
Orange paste food coloring, optional

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in orange juice and zest. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture. , Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls 2 in. apart onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes or until edges begin to brown. Remove to wire racks to cool. In a small bowl, combine icing ingredients until smooth; drizzle over cooled cookies.

1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 large eggs, separated, room temperature
1 cup buttermilk
5 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
Pinch salt
Juice and grated zest of 2 medium navel oranges
ICING:
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon grated orange zest

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325°. In a bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Beat in egg yolks and buttermilk. Sift together flour, baking powder, soda and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with orange juice and zest. Add egg whites and beat until smooth. , Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets. Bake until set, about 10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely., For icing, combine all ingredients and beat until smooth. Frost cooled cookies.

From the 1963 Betty Crocker Cooky Book. These are a cake-like cookie. For variety, add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts, raisins or chocolate chips. I used chocolate chips because I enjoy the taste of chocolate and orange together.

2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg, room temperature
1/2 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons orange zest, grated
1/2 cup raisins or 1/2 cup chocolate chips, if using

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 400F/200°C.
  • Mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
  • In another large mixing bowl, mix butter, sugar and egg thoroughly. Stir in orange juice and rind.
  • Sift dry ingredients into wet ingredients and blend together.
  • Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of dough about 2" apart on ungreased baking sheet.
  • Bake 8-10 minutes or until delicately browned on edges.
  • Remove from cookie sheets and cool completely. Store in an airtight container.
