3 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 cup warm water (110° to 115°), divided
1 teaspoon sugar
2 tablespoons canola oil
1 teaspoon salt
2-1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
TOPPING:
1/3 cup fat-free Italian salad dressing
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
Dash pepper
1 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • In a bowl, dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water. Add sugar; let stand for 5 minutes. Add the oil, salt, remaining water and 2 cups of flour; beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. , Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 40 minutes., Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Pat dough flat. Let rest for 5 minutes. Press into a greased 14-in. pizza pan. Spread with salad dressing. Combine the garlic powder, oregano, thyme and pepper; sprinkle over dough. Top with cheeses. , Bake at 450° for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.

Although my heritage is strictly Dutch, my family loves Italian food. These seasoned breadsticks are a great accompaniment to lasagna or pizza.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt, divided
1 package (1/4 ounce) quick-rise yeast
2 to 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup warm water (120° to 130°)
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon paprika
Italian seasoning or grated Parmesan cheese, optional

Steps:

  • In a food processor, combine the sugar, 3/4 teaspoon salt, yeast and 2 cups flour. Cover and process for 5-10 seconds. While processing, gradually add warm water and oil in a steady stream. Process for 1 minute or until smooth and elastic. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water or flour if needed. , Turn onto a floured surface. Roll into a 15x12-in. rectangle. Cut into 12 strips. Fold each strip in half lengthwise; twist each strip several times. Pinch ends to seal. Place 2 in. apart on a greased baking sheet. , In a small bowl, combine the butter, garlic powder, paprika and remaining salt. Brush some over dough. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning or Parmesan cheese if desired. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 25 minutes. , Bake at 425° for 6-8 minutes or until golden brown. People are astounded to learn I make this savory Italian bread from scratch in less that an hour. With this recipe from my brother-in-law, warm slices are a delicious and easy alternative to garlic toast. I'll sometimes use this bread as a snack or appetizer.

2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon quick-rise yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup warm water (120° to 130°)
1 tablespoon canola oil

1/4 to 1/3 cup prepared Italian salad dressing
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme

2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
2 tablespoons white sugar
¼ cup olive oil
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon dried basil
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
½ cup grated Romano cheese
6 cups bread flour

Steps:

  • Mix yeast, warm water, and white sugar together in a large bowl. Set aside for five minutes, or until mixture becomes foamy.
  • Stir olive oil, salt, herbs, garlic powder, onion powder, cheese, and 3 cups flour into the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the next three cups of flour. Dough will be stiff.
  • Knead dough for 5 to 10 minutes, or until it is smooth and rubbery. Place in an oiled bowl, and turn to cover the surface of the dough with oil. Cover with a damp linen dish towel. Allow to rise for one hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.
  • Punch dough down to release all the air. Shape into two loaves. Place loaves on a greased cookie sheet, or into two greased 9 x 5 inch loaf pans. Allow to rise until doubled in size, about a 30 minutes.

Dough:
1 cup warm water
1 tbsp yeast
1.5 tbsp sugar
2 3/4 cups bread flour
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp olive oil or vegetable oil
Other Ingredients:
6 tablespoons of butter (softened)
1/2 tbsp minced garlic cloves (you could use garlic powder)
1.5 cups pizza cheese
Italian Seasoning or Italian Seasoning Blend (see below)

Steps:

  • In a large bowl or stand mixer, mix together water, yeast, sugar.
  • Add in flour and salt.
  • Mix with a dough hook until it comes away from the sides of the bowl - add more flour if necessary.
  • Knead by hand or with dough hook for about five minutes.
  • Cover the dough ball with oil, place in a bowl, cover with plastic, and let rise at room temperature 30-45 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  • Grease 9×13 glass baking dish with butter
  • Press the dough into the pan
  • Spread the softened butter over the top of the dough
  • Spoon the minced garlic evenly over the top of the butter to make the garlic butter topping.
  • Sprinkle cheese over the top
  • Sprinkle Italian seasoning over the top
  • Cover with tin foil and bake for 15 minutes.
  • Remove tin foil and bake for another 10 minutes.
