HAM & WHITE CHEDDAR DIP BAKED IN A BREAD BOWL

Ham & White Cheddar Dip Baked in a Bread Bowl image

Just a nice twist on ham and cheese. Simple to throw together and baked right in a pumpernickel bread bowl. Now, you could use rye, whole wheat, but the pumpernickel just tastes the best to me. Just a nice change for a party dip.

Yield 4 Cups of dip, approx, 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 round loaf pumpernickel bread
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
2 cups white cheddar cheese (shredded)
1 1/2 cups sour cream (no low fat)
2/3 cup ham (pre-cooked and fine chopped. I just cut a thick slice of ham from the deli)
1/2 cup scallion, fine diced (green and white parts)
1 small onion, diced fine
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1/3 cup green chili (I use the mild, chopped fine. You can find them right in the Mexican or ethnic aisle in any major gr)
1 jalapeno pepper (to taste, seeds and ribs remove and fine chopped. You can use more of less if you want)
1/8 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
salt
pepper

Steps:

  • Dip -- First make sure your cream cheese is room temperature Then, in a medium bowl, add the cheddar cheese, cream cheese, sour cream, ham, chilies (green and jalapeno), scallions, onion, garlic, worcestershire, salt and pepper. Mix well and set to the side.
  • Bread -- Cut off a thin slice from the top of the loaf and scoop out the bread from the inside. Cut down as far as you can go with your knife without cutting through the outside of the loaf. Then use a spoon to get the rest of the bread out. That makes for great dipping.
  • Fill hollowed bread loaf with the dip; cover with reserved top slice of bread loaf and wrap the loaf in foil. In a 350 degree oven, bake 1 hour. Serve with reserved bread, crackers, bread sticks, vegetables, broccoli, even par boiled fingerlings are great with this. Endless things to dip.
  • A fun easy different dip which is just that little bit unique. And the best part it is kid and adult friendly and you can make it ahead. Just don't fill the bread bowl until you are ready to bake it. If I go to someones house, I usually bake it for about 45 and then just finish it in the oven there.

I served this recipe at a holiday party. It was the first appetizer to disappear, and was one of the easiest to prepare. With all that pork bacon, cheese, and a bread bowl - where else to put this recipe but the Midwestern U.S. states.

This is a recipe I found online about 6 years ago. Whenever we are invited anywhere this is always requested. The best part of this recipe is when the dip is gone and the bread has soaked up all the yummy dip. It's heavenly!!! You can use the bread cubes or crackers or veggies to dip. Enjoy!

CHEESY COUNTRY HAM DIP

Categories     appetizer

Time 1h

Yield 10 to 12 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

One 10-ounce package sliced country ham, such as Smithfield
Two 8-ounce blocks cream cheese, at room temperature
1 cup shredded extra-sharp Cheddar
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 large shallot, grated (about 1/3 cup)
Freshly ground black pepper
1 cup pecans, chopped
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Butter crackers, corn tortilla chips (not too thin) and sliced celery, for serving

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Place the ham slices on a microwave-safe dish lined with paper towels. Cover the ham with a damp paper towel and microwave on low heat until the ham is slightly crisp on the edges and the fat is absorbed in the paper towels, 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Remove the ham from the microwave and discard the paper towels. Using two forks, shred the ham into small bite-size pieces. Place the ham into a large mixing bowl.
  • Add the cream cheese, Cheddar, sour cream, garlic powder, shallot and 1 teaspoon black pepper to the mixing bowl and stir to combine. Spread the ham and cheese mixture into a 9-inch pie plate. Set aside.
  • In a small mixing bowl, combine the pecans, butter and Worcestershire sauce. Sprinkle the seasoned pecans over the ham and cheese dip.
  • Bake the dip until hot and bubbly around the edges, 25 to 30 minutes. Serve warm with butter crackers, corn tortilla and celery.

CHEESY HAM DIP IN A BREAD BOWL

Cheesy Ham Dip in a Bread Bowl image

Time 1h17m

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 large french bread
8 ounces cream cheese
1 1/2 cup sour cream
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
3 green onions, diced
1 cup diced cooked ham (leftovers work great)
1 (3 ounce) can of diced green chiles
2 jalapenos, diced and seeded. Keep the seeds if you like spice, remove them if you do not.
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 box Ritz Crackers

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350*F Slice off the top of the French bread and hollow out the center, leaving about 1/2 inch along the edges. Discard internal bread, eat it, or save for another recipe. You will not need it. In a bowl blend cream cheese and sour cream until smooth. Add cheese, green onions, ham, green chiles, jalapenos and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well. Spoon this mixture into hollowed out bread bowl. Place top back on bread bowl and wrap in foil. Place bread bowl on a cookie sheet and bake for 1 hour. Remove from oven, open from foil (careful it will be hot!) and remove top. Place back in oven and broil for a minute or two. Watch this closely as you do not want it to burn, just crisp the bread up a bit. Remove from oven, place on a serving platter with crackers and dive in!
