STEVE'S OFTEN COPIED, NEVER DUPLICATED, FURIKAKE CHEX MIX

Steve's Often Copied, Never Duplicated, Furikake Chex Mix image

This is a sweet and spicy Asian variation of Chex mix. There are times I have made this by the bucketful, and it still runs out at parties. I often give this out as Christmas or hostess gifts. Be very careful. This party mix is HIGHLY addictive, very dangerous to keep around in big quantities and may result in some weight gain! This recipe is a combination of a few recipes, one from foodgeeks.com and another from beanpaste.blogspot.com. It also has a few of my own personal touches.

Time 2h5m

Yield 12 1 cup, 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 cups Rice Chex or 2 cups Crispix cereal
2 cups Wheat Chex or 2 cups Crispix cereal
2 cups Corn Chex or 2 cups Crispix cereal
2 cups honeycomb cereal (optional)
2 cups pretzel sticks (I use Rold Gold brand)
2 cups dry roasted peanuts
1 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup light corn syrup
3 tablespoons soy sauce (I use Kikkoman. Hawaii people, DO NOT USE Aloha Brand for this!!!)
1/2 cup oil
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
1 (2 ounce) bottle Nori Goma Furikake (I prefer Nori Komi Furikake, but it wouldn't let me input Nori Komi Furikake, Mishima brand)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.
  • Mix together all the cereals, pretzels, and peanuts in a large baking pan (The tin foil ones that you can buy from the store to roast turkey works really well!).
  • Divide the mixture between two pans.
  • In a medium-sized sauce pan over medium to medium-high heat, melt butter.
  • Add sugar and dissolve well.
  • Add corn syrup, soy sauce, oil, Worcestershire sauce, and Tabasco Sauce. Stir until blended well. It works best if you heat till it reaches the hard ball stage (about 250 degrees).
  • Pour over cereal mixture, one pan at a time, and mix well.
  • Put into the oven.
  • After 15 minutes, remove from oven, and add one bottle of furikake to each pan. Mix around to evenly distribute furikake and sauce from the bottom.
  • Continue baking for about 1-2 hours, stirring every 15 minutes.
  • The cooking time fluauates depending on how crispy you want it, and how humid it is (making this in 90% humidity is a nightmare!).
  • Store in an air-tight container or ziplock bags.

Valuable Tips When Making Asian Firecracker Chex Party Mix Recipes

If you enjoy Asian-inspired snacks and are looking for a new exciting recipe to try, then Asian Firecracker Chex Party Mix is a great option. It combines the heat and spice of Asian flavors with the crunchiness of Chex cereals, making it the perfect snack to enjoy for a night in with friends or family. While the recipe might seem simple, there are some valuable tips you should keep in mind to create the best Asian Firecracker Chex Party Mix possible. Here are five tips to keep in mind:
Tip #1: Choose the Right Ingredients
Before you start making your party mix, it is essential to select the proper ingredients, as they can make or break the recipe. When it comes to Asian Firecracker Chex Party Mix, it is vital to choose cereals carefully. In addition to traditional Chex cereals like rice or corn, you can also mix in some Chinese noodles, wasabi peas, and Asian snack mixes like Pocky. Other essential ingredients include oil, your preferred spices, soy sauce, sesame oil, and honey. These ingredients create the salty and sweet flavors that make the blend so addictive.
Tip #2: Ensure Even Coating
When creating the firecracker mix, it is essential to ensure that each cereal piece has an even coating of the sauce. To achieve this, mix the ingredients in a large bowl before adding the sauce to guarantee they are well combined. To prevent clumps and uneven coating, add the sauce to the mix in batches gradually. Don't add all the sauce at once; instead, mix the cereals, noodles, and other ingredients in a large bowl and pour the sauce in small increments. Use a spatula to fold the mixture gently between each addition of sauce.
Tip #3: Use the Right Spices
The firecracker mix should be spicy without overpowering the other flavors, making it essential to choose the right spices carefully. The recipe typically calls for chili powder, garlic powder, and onion powder. You can also experiment with other seasonings based on your preferences, like ginger, black pepper, or red pepper flakes. The use of wasabi paste, toasted sesame seeds, and soy sauce adds an umami flavor to the mix.
Tip #4: Be Mindful of Baking Time
Once the mix has been evenly coated, you should bake it at a low temperature for about 45 to 60 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes. Make sure to spread the mixture evenly on a baking sheet to obtain an even layer. The baking time should vary depending on the oven's temperature, so keep a close eye on the mix to ensure it doesn't get burnt. If you're unsure, reduce the temperature slightly and bake the mixture for a little longer.
Tip #5: Store the Mix Appropriately
One of the great qualities of an Asian Firecracker Chex Party Mix recipe is that it can be prepared ahead of time, making it ideal for parties and gatherings. If stored correctly, the party mix can stay fresh for weeks. To ensure your mix stays fresh, store it in an airtight container. It is best not to refrigerate party mix as it can cause the mix to lose its crunchiness. Storing the mix in an airtight container at room temperature is the best way to extend its shelf life.

Conclusion

Overall, the Asian Firecracker Chex Party Mix is a delicious and easy recipe that anyone can make. By following these five tips, you can create a perfect, addictively spicy mix that'll impress your guests. Remember to choose the right ingredients, ensure an even coating, use the right spices, monitor baking time and store the mix appropriately. Happy cooking!
