ARUGULA, PEAR AND GOAT CHEESE SALAD WITH POMEGRANATE VINAIGRETTE

Arugula, Pear and Goat Cheese Salad With Pomegranate Vinaigrette image

I think this makes a perfect holiday salad. I will be making it for Thanksgiving and will report back. Source: Food52. com / brigidc's. This is her description of the salad. Sweet, salty, tart, crunchy and spicy, this salad has perfect flavor and texture balance. The inspiration was pomegranate molasses, which I learned about when I worked on a Persian food class. I like how the molasses takes the acidic edge off the vinaigrette but it is still tangy and delicious. Be sure to try this no fuss, no muss recipe Recipe #446884 I made my own pomegranate molasses: Recipe #490458 It's easy and can be reduced to make a smaller amount. It can be stored up to 6 months.

Arugula is a leafy green vegetable that is commonly used in salads and other dishes. It has a slightly peppery taste and is packed with nutrients, making it a great addition to any meal. One way to bring out the flavor of arugula is to pair it with a vinaigrette dressing. Vinaigrette is a classic French sauce that consists of oil and vinegar, along with other herbs and spices. When paired with arugula, vinaigrette adds a tangy, acidic flavor that complements the greens perfectly.

The Benefits of Arugula

Arugula is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium. It is also rich in antioxidants, which can help protect against chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Additionally, arugula is low in calories and high in fiber, making it a great choice for anyone watching their weight or looking to improve their digestion.

Types of Vinaigrette

There are countless variations of vinaigrette, but most recipes include a combination of oil and acid, along with other flavorings such as herbs, mustard, or honey. Some popular types of vinaigrette include:
Balsamic Vinaigrette
Balsamic vinaigrette is a sweet and tangy dressing made from balsamic vinegar, oil, and other seasonings. It is perfect for drizzling over salads or using as a marinade for meats and vegetables.
Lemon Vinaigrette
Lemon vinaigrette is a light and refreshing dressing made from fresh lemon juice, oil, and herbs such as thyme and oregano. It is perfect for pairing with seafood dishes or drizzling over grilled vegetables.
Red Wine Vinaigrette
Red wine vinaigrette is a classic dressing made from red wine vinegar, oil, and herbs such as garlic and basil. It is perfect for using as a marinade for meats or drizzling over salads.

Arugula Salad Ideas

Arugula can be used in a variety of salads, both as a standalone green or mixed with other vegetables and fruits. Here are some ideas for delicious arugula salads:
Arugula, Pear, and Blue Cheese Salad
This salad combines the peppery flavor of arugula with the sweet and juicy taste of fresh pears. Top it off with crumbled blue cheese for an extra burst of flavor.
Arugula and Tomato Salad
This simple salad combines the fresh taste of tomatoes with the slightly bitter flavor of arugula. Drizzle with a lemon vinaigrette and top with shaved Parmesan for a delicious and healthy lunch.
Grilled Peach and Arugula Salad
This salad is perfect for summer months when peaches are in season. Grill fresh peaches and toss them with arugula, pecans, and a honey vinaigrette for a sweet and tangy flavor.

Arugula and vinaigrette recipes are a popular choice for those seeking a healthy and flavorful salad. Arugula greens have a distinct peppery flavor and are packed with nutrients, while vinaigrettes provide the perfect balance of tangy acidity and rich flavor. However, there are several valuable tips to keep in mind when making arugula and vinaigrette recipes to ensure the perfect taste and presentation.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Arugula Greens

One of the most important factors in making a delicious arugula salad is choosing the right arugula greens. When selecting your arugula, look for leaves that are crisp, fresh, and vibrant in color. Avoid leaves that are wilted or have brown spots, as these are signs of decay and won't taste as good. It's also important to consider the texture of the leaves. Arugula leaves can vary in texture from tender to tough. Tender leaves are easier to chew and have a delicate flavor, while tougher leaves are more fibrous and have a stronger peppery taste. Consider the texture you prefer and choose your arugula variety accordingly.

Tip 2: Make Your Vinaigrette from Scratch

While it's tempting to use store-bought vinaigrette, making your own from scratch will take your arugula salad to the next level. Homemade vinaigrettes are fresher, taste better, and allow you to control the ingredients and flavors. To make a basic vinaigrette from scratch, you'll need a good quality oil, vinegar, and some seasonings. A classic vinaigrette uses a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio of oil to vinegar, but you can adjust the ratio to your liking. Whisk the ingredients together in a bowl or shake them in a jar until they are emulsified. You may also want to consider adding herbs, garlic, mustard, or honey to your vinaigrette for added flavor.

Tip 3: Use Acidic Ingredients to Complement the Arugula

Arugula has a naturally peppery, slightly bitter flavor that can be enhanced by using acidic ingredients in your vinaigrette. Lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar, or apple cider vinegar are all great choices that will complement the arugula's flavor. In addition to the vinaigrette, consider adding other acidic ingredients to your salad to balance out the flavors. Tomatoes, citrus fruits, pickled onions, or capers are all excellent choices that will add a tangy pop to your salad.

Tip 4: Pair Arugula with Complementary Ingredients

While arugula is tasty on its own, adding complementary ingredients will take your salad to the next level. Consider adding ingredients that will bring out the peppery flavor of the arugula and provide contrasting textures and flavors. Some excellent ingredients to pair with arugula include: - Fruits like pears, apples, or grapes - Nuts like walnuts or pine nuts - Cheese like goat cheese or blue cheese - Vegetables like roasted beets or grilled zucchini - Protein like grilled chicken or shrimp

Tip 5: Properly Dress Your Salad

Properly dressing your salad is key to ensuring that all of the ingredients are coated in the vinaigrette and that the flavors are evenly distributed. To dress your salad, add the desired amount of vinaigrette to the bowl, and use a pair of tongs or salad utensils to toss the salad together. Be careful not to over-dress your salad, as this can lead to a soggy and unappetizing salad. Start with a small amount of dressing, and add more as needed, tasting as you go along.

Tip 6: Add Crunchy Toppings at the Last Minute

Adding crunchy toppings like nuts or croutons is a great way to add texture and flavor to your arugula salad. However, it's important to add these toppings at the last minute to avoid them becoming soggy or losing their crunch. Save your crunchy toppings and add them to the salad just before serving. This will ensure that they are crisp and flavorful and provide a great contrast to the soft arugula leaves.
Conclusion
Arugula and vinaigrette recipes are a great option for a healthy and flavorful salad. By following these valuable tips, you'll be able to make a salad that is both delicious and visually appealing. Choose the right arugula greens, make your own vinaigrette, use acidic ingredients, pair arugula with complementary ingredients, dress your salad properly, and add crunchy toppings at the last minute. With these tips in mind, you'll be able to make a salad that is sure to impress.
