AIR-FRYER APPLE PIE EGG ROLLS

Air-Fryer Apple Pie Egg Rolls image

These easy apple pie egg rolls can be prepared as needed, using egg roll wrappers as vessels for the fruit rather than traditional pie crust. The air-fryer method of cooking results in a crispy, crunchy crust with a tender, juicy filling. Flavored cream cheese spread may be used instead of plain, depending on availability. -Sheila Suhan, Scottdale, Pennsylvania

APPLE PIE LUMPIA (EGG ROLLS)

Apple Pie Lumpia (Egg Rolls) image

Provided by Wanna Make This?

Categories     dessert

Time 45m

Yield 8 rolls

Number Of Ingredients 14

4 Granny Smith apples (about 2 pounds)
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 large egg
8 egg roll wrappers
1/2 cup granulated sugar
Vegetable oil, for frying
1 cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • For the lumpia: Peel and dice the apples into 1/2-inch pieces.
  • Melt the butter in a large saute pan over medium heat. Add the apples and cook until just beginning to soften, 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Whisk together the brown sugar, cornstarch, nutmeg, allspice, salt and 1/2 teaspoon of the cinnamon in a medium bowl. Sprinkle the spiced sugar over the apples and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples have softened and cooked down to half their size and the sauce has a compote-like consistency, about 3 minutes more. Turn off the heat and let cool.
  • Beat the egg with 1 tablespoon water in a small bowl. Place 1 egg roll wrapper on a clean work surface, orientated in a diamond shape. Place a heaping 1/4 cupful of the apple mixture onto the lower half of the wrapper. Fold the bottom point up and over the filling, tucking the ends snugly. Fold the side points in towards the center. Brush the remaining top point along the edge with egg wash, and then roll up the filling to completely seal. Repeat with the remaining filling and wrappers.
  • Stir together the granulated sugar with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon in a shallow bowl or pie plate.
  • Line a baking sheet with a wire rack. Add enough oil to come 2 inches up the sides of a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven. Clip a deep-fry thermometer onto the side and heat to 365 degrees F. When the oil has come up to temperature, add the lumpia, 5 or 6 at a time (depending on the size of your pot) and cook until golden brown, rotating halfway through, 4 to 5 minutes. Remove with a spider and drain on the prepared baking sheet. While still warm, toss the lumpia in the cinnamon-sugar to coat, shaking off excess. Repeat with the remaining lumpia.
  • For the whipped cream: Add the heavy cream and confectioners' sugar to a chilled large bowl and whip with a hand mixer to soft peaks.
  • Cut the lumpia in half and serve with a dollop of sweetened whipped cream.

SALTED CARAMEL APPLE CINNAMON ROLLS RECIPE BY TASTY

Salted Caramel Apple Cinnamon Rolls Recipe by Tasty image

Consider these cinnamon rolls fall-ified. We stuffed our classic cinnamon rolls with thinly sliced Granny Smith apples and drizzled them with homemade salted caramel sauce. It's ooey, gooey goodness in every bite. Enjoy for breakfast or dessert!

Provided by Betsy Carter

Categories     Desserts

Time 3h5m

Yield 10 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 Homemade Cinnamon Roll
2 granny smith apples, sliced into 1/4 in (6 mm) wedges
1 tablespoon lemon juice
unsalted butter, for greasing
1 cup sugar
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
½ cup heavy cream, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ teaspoon flaky sea salt

Steps:

  • Prepare the cinnamon roll dough and filling according to the recipe instructions.
  • Add the apples and lemon juice to a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20-second increments, until the apples are softened and limp.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a 9 x 13-inch (22x33 cm) baking dish with butter.
  • Roll the dough into a large rectangle about ½-inch (1.24 cm) thick. Straighten the corners with a bench scraper to make sure they are sharp and even.
  • Spread the filling evenly over the dough, then arrange the apple slices on top, leaving about ¼ inch (6 mm) between each slice. Try to keep your slices in straight rows, it's okay if the tips of the apple slices touch or overlap.
  • Starting from a short end, roll the dough into a log and pinch the seam closed. Place the log seam-side down and trim off the uneven ends. Using unflavored dental floss or a sharp knife, cut the log into even pieces, each about 1½ inches (3 ½ cm) thick. Place the rolls in the prepared baking dish, cover with a kitchen towel, and set in a warm place for 35-45 minutes, until expanded in volume by about 50%. If not baking immediately, skip this step, cover with plastic wrap and freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Bake the cinnamon rolls for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 10 minutes.
  • While the cinnamon rolls bake, make the salted caramel sauce: Add the sugar to a small saucepan and cook over medium heat, swirling the pan occasionally but not stirring, until it starts to turn amber brown, 5-6 minutes.
  • Add the butter and stir in until incorporated, 1-2 minutes..
  • Slowly drizzle in the cream and whisk to combine. Boil for 1 minute, then remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and flaky salt. Let cool and thicken slightly before using.
  • Pour the salted caramel sauce over the cinnamon rolls, then serve.
  • Enjoy!

APPLE CINNAMON ROLLS

Apple Cinnamon Rolls image

This came from the Yankton, South Dakota Press and Dakotan newspaper. My DD does not like cinnamon rolls (my child?) so I thought this might be more like a caramel apple and less like cinnamon. It is very caramel-like and the apples are soft and fragrant. Worth the time to make the filling. If you have a kitchen aid mixer, follow your manufacturer directions to make the dough with the mixer!

Yield 12 rolls

Number Of Ingredients 23

1 cup (236 milliliters) almond milk or dairy milk, warm (105 to 110 degrees F)
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/4 cup (50 grams) plus 1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon kosher salt
Pinch ground cardamom
4 1/2 cups (585 grams) all-purpose flour, plus additional for dusting
2 large eggs
1/2 cup (100 grams) flavorless oil, plus additional for oiling the bowl
1/4 cup (84 grams) honey
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Nonstick cooking spray, for the baking dish
3/4 cup apple butter (store-bought or homemade)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
6 ounces almond paste, grated on the big holes of a box grater or finely chopped
1 large egg
1 1/2 cups blanched almonds
1/4 cup honey
1 teaspoon almond extract
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Zest from 1/2 lemon
6 tablespoons almond milk
Toasted sliced almonds, for topping

Steps:

  • For the rolls: Combine the milk, yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in a bowl and swirl together. Let sit until foamy on top, about 5 minutes.
  • Combine the cinnamon, salt, cardamom and 3 1/2 cups flour in a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook. Whisk together the eggs, oil, honey and vanilla in a medium bowl. Stir the yeast mixture and oil mixture into the dry mixture and then knead, either on a work surface or with the dough hook, adding up to 1 cup more flour as needed, until the dough is smooth and slightly sticky, 15 minutes by hand and 7 to 10 minutes by mixer. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let rise until doubled in size, 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  • For the filling: Spray a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.
  • Turn the dough out onto a clean surface and roll it out, dusting with flour as needed to prevent sticking, into an 18-by-12-inch rectangle. Spread it with the apple butter and sprinkle with the cinnamon and almond paste. Roll up tightly starting from a long end (so that it results in an 18-inch-long roll), and pinch the edges to seal. Cut into 12 rolls and place in the prepared baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. (Or cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise at room temperature for 1 hour, then go right to preheating the oven.)
  • When ready to bake, remove the rolls from the refrigerator and loosen the plastic wrap. Let sit at room temperature until puffy, 1 to 2 hours.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Beat the egg with a splash of water in a cup. Remove the plastic wrap from the baking dish and brush the rolls with the egg wash. Bake until the rolls are lightly browned and have an internal temperature of 190 degrees F, 35 to 40 minutes.
  • For the frosting: Meanwhile, blend the blanched almonds in a food processor, scraping the sides occasionally, until creamy and spreadable, 5 to 10 minutes. Add the honey, almond extract, salt and lemon zest and continue to blend (it may clump together at this point, and that's okay) as you drizzle in the milk. Blend until creamy. (This can be made the day before and stored in an airtight container in the fridge.)
  • When the rolls come out of the oven, spread them with the frosting, sprinkle with the sliced almonds and serve.

Time 13h35m

Yield Makes 12

Number Of Ingredients 17

6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus more, room-temperature, for bowl and dish
1 medium russet potato (8 ounces), peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces (1 1/4 cups)
1 cup whole milk
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (not rapid-rise; one whole 1/4-ounce envelope)
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
3 1/2 cups bread flour, plus more for dusting
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
3 tablespoons apple butter, such as Red Jacket Orchards
2/3 cup packed light-brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch kosher salt
1 cup chopped toasted pecans
1/2 cup dried currants or chopped raisins
3/4 cup packed light-brown sugar
4 tablespoons unsalted butter

Steps:

  • Dough: Brush a large bowl with butter; set aside. Place potato in a small pot of water and bring to a boil. Cook until fork-tender, 10 to 12 minutes; drain. Pass through a ricer or mash with a fork until smooth (to yield 2/3 cup); let cool slightly.
  • Heat milk until warm to the touch (110 degrees on a thermometer). Transfer to the bowl of a stand mixer; add yeast. Let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes. Stir in butter, granulated sugar, potato, egg, flour, and salt until a ragged dough forms. Place bowl on mixer fitted with the dough-hook attachment; mix on medium-low speed, scraping sides and removing dough from hook a few times, until soft and pliable, about 15 minutes. Transfer to a lightly floured surface; knead into a ball. Transfer to buttered bowl (dough will be very soft) and cover with plastic wrap. (Dough can be covered and refrigerated at this point up to 2 days). Let rise in a warm place until almost doubled, 1 hour and 10 minutes to 1 1/2 hours. Brush two 8-inch cake pans with butter; set aside.
  • Filling: In a bowl, stir together butter and apple butter. In another bowl, combine brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Punch down dough; transfer to a lightly floured surface. Roll out to a 14-by-18-inch rectangle. Spread evenly with butter mixture, leaving a 1/2-inch border on far long edge; top with brown-sugar mixture, pecans, and currants. Starting at long edge closest to you, roll dough away from you into a tight jelly-roll shape. Transfer, seam-side down, to a parchment-lined baking sheet and refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes. Trim ends, then cut roll crosswise into twelve 1 1/2-inch-thick rounds with a serrated knife. Arrange, cut-sides up, in prepared pans; cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate at least 8 hours, or overnight.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Remove rolls from refrigerator and place in a warm spot until almost doubled in size, about 1 1/2 hours. Remove plastic and bake until browned on top and a thermometer inserted registers about 210 degrees, 30 to 35 minutes. Let cool in pans on a wire rack, 10 minutes.
  • Glaze: Meanwhile, heat brown sugar, butter, apple butter, and 1 tablespoon water in a saucepan over medium, stirring, until simmering; cook 1 minute. Drizzle over rolls; let cool at least 20 minutes. Serve.

  • Meanwhile, combine apples and sugar for filling in a large saucepan. Let stand until juice starts to release. Place over medium-high heat and stir frequently until mixture comes to a boil. Boil hard for 1 minute, stirring frequently. Stir tapioca, lemon juice, and cinnamon into the mixture. Boil hard for 1 minute more; remove from heat.
  • Punch down risen dough and separate into 2 pieces. Roll out 1 piece into a large rectangle, about 9x13 inches and 1-inch thick. Spread 3 tablespoons melted butter all over the dough. Spread 1/2 of the apple mixture as evenly as possible over dough. Sprinkle 1/4 cup brown sugar evenly over apples. Roll dough as tightly as possible and squish seams together. Use a sharp knife or a piece of unflavored dental floss to slice dough into about a dozen 1-inch-thick rolls. Place rolls into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Repeat with second piece of dough. Let rise until doubled in size, 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Bake rolls in the preheated oven until golden, 20 to 22 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, mix sugar, water, and corn syrup together in a medium-large saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat, whisking until sugar is dissolved. Let mixture boil until it turns caramel-colored, 5 to 12 minutes, watching so that it doesn't burn. Reduce heat to low; slowly stir in cream, vanilla extract, and salt. Continue to simmer caramel topping until thickened, about 1 minute more.
  • Remove cinnamon rolls from the oven and drizzle with caramel while hot.

CARAMEL-APPLE EGG ROLLS

Caramel-Apple Egg Rolls image

Provided by Food Network

Categories     dessert

Time 45m

Yield 12 egg rolls

Number Of Ingredients 15

3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into small dice
2/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup bourbon
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Pinch ground cloves
1 heaping tablespoon finely diced candied ginger
12 lumpia wrappers (available at Asian markets)
1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon cold water
Vegetable oil, for deep-frying
2/3 cup powdered sugar
1 quart vanilla ice cream, as accompaniment

Steps:

  • To prepare the filling, toss the apples with about 1 tablespoon of the sugar and set aside. Place the remaining sugar in a large saute pan over high heat and cook, without stirring, until the sugar starts to caramelize and turns golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes (it happens fast, so don't leave the stove). Add the apples and toss to coat with the sugar. Remove the pan from the heat, add the bourbon, and then place it back over the heat. (The bourbon can flame up, so be very careful.) Bring the bourbon to a boil, add the butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and cloves, and cook over high heat until the apples are tender, about 4 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a large bowl and let cool until tepid. Add the candied ginger and mix well.
  • To prepare the egg rolls, place 1 lumpia wrapper on a flat surface, with a corner pointing toward you (as you look down on it, the wrapper should be a diamond shape). Place a heaping tablespoon of the filling on the wrapper about 1/2-inch from the corner closest to you, and then fold the corner over the filling. Fold the side corners over the filling, then roll to the opposite corner to form a cylinder. Brush the edge of the wrapper with the beaten egg to seal. Continue with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  • Heat about 4 inches of vegetable oil in a large saucepan over high heat until it reaches 350 degrees F. (You can check the temperature with a candy thermometer, or place a piece of bread in the oil; if it turns brown in about 40 seconds the oil should be at about 350 degrees F) Add as many egg rolls as will fit without overcrowding, and fry until golden brown, 1 to 2 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Let cool for 3 to 4 minutes, then dust with powdered sugar. Continue with the remaining egg rolls.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream.

Valuable Tips When Making Apple Rolls Recipes

Apple rolls are a perfect way to indulge in a sweet treat or a dessert. If you are a lover of all things apple, then this recipe is perfect for you. Apple rolls are simple to make, but they also require a few essential steps to ensure that they come out perfectly baked and have the perfect texture. Whether you are a seasoned baker or a beginner, there are plenty of valuable tips you need to follow to make the perfect apple roll recipe.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Apples

The first and foremost important thing when making apple rolls is to choose the right type of apples. Apples with a firm texture that can hold their shape during baking are the best apple to use in this recipe. Apples like Granny Smith, Honey crisp, or Jonathan are the ideal apples to use because they can withstand the high temperature and retain their texture and flavour after baking.

Tip 2: Roll Out the Dough Thinly and Evenly

To make perfect apple rolls, you need to roll out the dough thinly and evenly. The texture of the pastry should be crispy and flaky. Rolling the dough evenly entails using a rolling pin to flatten out the dough to your desired thickness. Rolling helps ensure that the dough cooks evenly, thus making your apple rolls have an excellent texture.

Tip 3: Ensure That Your Filling is Not too Wet

The filling is what makes or breaks an apple roll recipe. For the best results, you want to ensure that your filling is not too wet or runny. The filling should not be too thick or too sticky; instead, it should hold together without falling apart. To thicken your filling, use a tablespoon of cornstarch or flour. By doing this, you will prevent the filling from becoming excessive or running out during the baking process, which would make a mess of your kitchen.

Tip 4: Add Spices for More Flavour

Spices are the perfect way to add a depth of flavour to your apple rolls. The traditional spices used when making apple rolls are cinnamon, allspice or nutmeg: however, you could add vanilla or almond extract or other aromatics to give your apple rolls a unique and tasty flavour. If you are not sure about which spice to use, add your preference gradually, so that you do not overpower the flavour of the recipe.

Tip 5: Use Parchment Paper to Line Your Baking Tray

Baking apple rolls require a bit of care because if not done properly, the bottom of the rolls can easily burn, and they can stick to the baking tray. To keep your apple rolls from sticking to the tray, line your baking tray with parchment paper. This not only helps to keep the rolls from sticking to the bottom of the tray but also make sure that the rolls bake evenly on all sides.

Tip 6: Brush the Apple Rolls with Egg Wash

Brush the apple rolls with egg wash (a mixture of beaten egg and water) before baking to give them a shiny and golden finish. The egg wash helps the rolls to develop a crispy outer crust while still maintaining the moisture and flavour of the apple filling.

Tip 7: Cool the Apple Rolls before Serving

After baking your apple rolls, let them cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the apple filling to set and prevents the rolls from becoming too soft or losing shape. You could also opt to refrigerate the apple rolls after cooling them to maintain their texture and freshness for a more extended period.

Tip 8: Use a Sharp Knife to Cut the Apple Rolls

To ensure that your apple rolls come out as perfectly as you expect them to, use a sharp knife to cut them. Use a serrated knife to ensure that you cut through the pastry and filling without squishing the apple filling or having the pastry fall apart.

Tip 9: Use Fresh Ingredients

For the most delicious and flavorful apple rolls, make sure that you use fresh ingredients. Fresh apples will not only give a sweet and tart flavor, but they will also have the perfect texture that is not too soft or overripe. Fresh ingredients ensure that you not only make a healthy dessert but also one that is full of flavour.

Conclusion

Apple rolls are a delicious and easy treat to make. However, it is essential to follow the necessary steps to make them perfect. Choosing the right apples, rolling the dough thinly and evenly, using the right filling, adding the right spices, and cooling the rolls before serving are some essential tips to consider when making apple rolls. Whether you make them for breakfast or as an after-dinner treat, apple rolls are a classic dessert that everyone will enjoy.
