APPLE BLUSH PIE

Apple Blush Pie image

This is from a cookbook my Grandma gave me when I was 11 . I have no idea what the name of the book is since it lost its cover years ago. For years I have wanted to make this but always forget to buy the cinnamon hearts at Valentines but this year I bought FOUR lage bags to put away and finally made this. We loved it . I crushed some of the hearts and left some whole . Next time they will all be left whole . I think any hard cinnamon candies would work. I can't remember how many cups the five apple came to but I usually add more anyway I like a nice plump pie ( added extra ingredients accordingly) The orignal recipe had no timings but I think I cooked it for about 45 minutes. My oven is really fickle right now so one day it might burn and the next day take forever LOL

GRANDMOTHER VELMA'S BLUSH APPLE PIE

Grandmother Velma's Blush Apple Pie image

My grandmother was famous for her Blush Apple Pies. I always asked her to make at least one when we went to visit. I recommend Mean Chef's Classic Pie Crust (#26205), but the refrigerated rolled crusts work too, if you are in a hurry. This is an easy and quick pie, but the flavor added by the pineapple and red hots is wonderful.

Valuable Tips When Making Apple Blush Pie Recipes

Apple blush pie is a delicious and nutritious dessert that is perfect for any occasion. The pie features a mix of sweet and tart apples with a sprinkle of cinnamon that is sure to make your taste buds dance. Making apple blush pie is not as complicated as it may seem, and with the right tools and techniques, you can create a pie that everyone will love.

Choose the Right Apples

The success of your apple blush pie recipe depends on the type of apples you choose. When making this pie, it is important to use apples that are both sweet and tart to get the perfect balance of flavors. Some popular apple varieties that work well in apple blush pie recipes include:

  • Honeycrisp
  • Braeburn
  • Fuji
  • Gala
  • Granny Smith

Make sure to select apples that are at their peak ripeness for the best flavor. Apples that are too green or too ripe will not give you the desired level of sweetness and tartness.

Use the Right Tools

To make an apple blush pie, you need a number of tools to ensure that the process is as smooth as possible. Some of the tools you will need include:

  • A pastry cutter or a food processor to mix the dough
  • A rolling pin to roll the dough
  • A pie tin or pan to bake the pie
  • A sharp knife to cut the apples into thin slices

You may also need kitchen towels, parchment paper, and a wire rack to cool the pie once it is removed from the oven.

Prevent Soggy Bottoms

There is nothing worse than a soggy bottom on your apple blush pie. To avoid this, you need to use a few techniques that will help you keep the crust from getting mushy as the pie bakes. Some of these techniques include:

  • Prick the bottom of the crust with a fork to allow steam to escape.
  • Blind bake the crust before adding the filling.
  • Dust the crust with flour or cornmeal to absorb excess moisture.

These simple techniques will help you get a crispy and flaky crust that complements the juicy and flavorful apple filling.

Balance the Flavors

The key to making a delicious apple blush pie is to balance the flavors. You want the pie to be sweet but not too sweet, and tart but not so tart that it becomes bitter. To achieve this balance, you can add different ingredients to the filling, such as:

  • Lemon juice to add a tangy flavor
  • Orange zest to bring out the sweetness of the apples
  • Brown sugar to enhance the caramelization of the apples
  • Cinnamon and nutmeg to add warmth and depth to the flavors

Experiment with these ingredients until you find the perfect balance of flavors that works for you.

Get Creative with the Shape of the Pie

An apple blush pie does not have to be a traditional round shape. You can get creative with how you shape your pie to make it more visually appealing. Some options include:

  • A lattice top, where you weave the crust in a crisscross pattern
  • A braided crust, where you twist and braid strips of dough to form a unique design
  • A crimped edge, where you pinch the crust with your fingers to create a decorative effect

These techniques will make your pie stand out and look as good as it tastes.

Cool Before Serving

After baking your apple blush pie, do not serve it immediately. Allow the pie to cool for at least 30 minutes to an hour to allow the filling to set. You can serve it warm or at room temperature, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream can make it even more delicious.

Now that you have these valuable tips for making an apple blush pie, you can confidently create a pie that is perfect for any occasion. Remember to choose the right apples, use the right tools, prevent soggy bottoms, balance the flavors, get creative with the shape, and cool before serving.
