APPLE SMOKED BAKED BEANS

Apple Smoked Baked Beans image

A family favorite for summer cookoouts, you will be tempted to eat these beans as soon as they are cooked, TRUST ME!, Wait until the next day to eat them. My wife; who hates beans, will actually eat some of these. It only took me @20 years of testing to get her to eat baked beans regularly.

Time 6h30m

Yield 15 , 15 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 lb navy beans
1 (20 ounce) can pineapple chunks
5 slices bacon
6 ounces tomato paste

4 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
3 tablespoons cider vinegar

1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons ground ginger

  • Open pineapple chunks and drain (reserving liquid), add to the beans.
  • Mix tomato paste, molassas, soy sauce, cider vinegar, honey, pineapple juice, garlic powder, black pepper, cinnamon and ground ginger in a small bowl then add to beans. mix to coat completely.
  • Divide the mixture between 2 baking dishes that will fit in your smoker (or in your oven).

Place in your smoker with the wood chips of your choice(I prefer apple) at 200 degrees until the bacon is cooked, @6 hours. If you are using an oven either place a pan of water in the oven or reduce the cooking time, to when the bacon is cooked to a golden brown.
  • Mix both batches of beans in a large covered bowl, refrigerate over night, then gently reheat and serve the next day.

Since then, the recipe has evolved, and it is now cooked in various parts of the world with different twists and flavors.

Ingredients

These ingredients are easily available in most grocery stores, and you can always improvise with what you have in the kitchen.

Preparation

First, you'll need to soak the navy beans overnight in cold water. The following day, drain the water and rinse the beans. Next, cook the bacon in a large skillet until brown and crisp. Add onions and garlic and cook until the onions become soft. Add the beans to the skillet along with the chopped apples, tomato paste, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and molasses. Pour in enough water to cover the beans, bring the mixture to a boil, and then reduce to a simmer. Cook for about 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally until the beans are tender and the sauce has thickened.

Variations

Apple baked beans recipe can be prepared with different variations to achieve different flavors. One variation is to substitute the navy beans with pinto beans, which gives it a creamy texture. Another variation is to add chopped jalapenos for a spicy kick. You can also add different types of meat to the recipe. For example, you can add diced ham or sausage instead of bacon. Adding smoked meats can give the dish a smokier flavor.

Serving

Apple baked beans are traditionally served as a side dish accompanying other foods such as meats, rice, and vegetables. The dish can also be enjoyed as a main dish with some freshly baked bread or cornbread.

Apple baked beans is a delicious and comforting dish that is perfect for any occasion. Whether you’re hosting a BBQ, a potluck, or just want to make a hearty meal for your family, apple baked beans is a great option. The dish is easy to make and can be served as a side or a main course. In this article, we’ll be sharing some valuable tips for making the perfect apple baked beans recipe.

Tip #1: Use the Right Beans

The key to making great apple baked beans is to use the right kind of beans. While you can use any type of beans you like, we recommend using navy beans, which are small, oval-shaped beans that hold their shape well when cooked. You can also use northern beans, which are similar to navy beans in texture and flavor.

Tip #2: Choose the Right Apples

Another important factor in making apple baked beans is choosing the right apples. You want to choose apples that are slightly tart and hold their shape well when cooked. Granny Smith apples are a great option for apple baked beans, but you can also use other tart apples, such as Honeycrisp or Braeburn.

Tip #3: Use Quality Ingredients

When making apple baked beans, it’s important to use quality ingredients. This includes using high-quality beans, fresh apples, and high-quality spices, such as smoked paprika, cumin, and thyme. Using fresh ingredients will ensure that your apple baked beans are flavorful and delicious.

Tip #4: Add Some Heat

If you like your apple baked beans with a bit of heat, consider adding some chopped jalapeno peppers or hot sauce. This will add some spice and depth to your dish. Just be careful not to overdo it, as you don’t want the heat to overpower the other flavors in the dish.

Tip #5: Use a Slow Cooker

One of the best ways to make apple baked beans is to use a slow cooker. This will allow the flavors to meld together over a long period of time, resulting in a rich and flavorful dish. Simply combine all of the ingredients in the slow cooker and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or on high for 4-5 hours.

Tip #6: Add Some Bacon

If you want to add some extra flavor to your apple baked beans, consider adding some bacon. Cook the bacon separately and then crumble it into the beans before serving. This will add a delicious smoky flavor to the dish, making it even more savory and delicious.

Tip #7: Serve with Cornbread

Apple baked beans are delicious on their own, but they are even better when served with cornbread. The sweetness of the cornbread pairs perfectly with the savory flavors of the beans, creating a delicious and comforting meal.

Tip #8: Experiment with Different Spices

Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment with different spices when making apple baked beans. You can try adding some cinnamon or nutmeg for a slightly sweeter flavor, or some smoked paprika for a smoky and savory taste. Just remember to taste as you go, so you can adjust the seasoning to your liking.

Conclusion

Making apple baked beans is easy and fun, and with these tips, you can make a delicious and comforting dish that your family and friends will love. Remember to use the right ingredients, including high-quality beans and fresh apples, and don’t be afraid to experiment with different spices and flavors. And don’t forget to serve your apple baked beans with some delicious cornbread for a truly satisfying meal.
