Apple and cheddar strata is a popular variation that combines the flavors of sweet and savory for a delicious breakfast or brunch option. This dish is easy to make and can serve a large group, making it perfect for potlucks or family gatherings.

Ingredients

Depending on the recipe, apple and cheddar strata can contain a variety of ingredients. However, some of the staple items often used include:
Bread:
Strata requires bread to form the base of the dish. Any type of bread can be used, but firmer varieties like sourdough or French bread tend to work best.
Eggs:
Eggs are the binding agent in the dish that hold everything together. The number of eggs used varies depending on the recipe and number of servings.
Cheese:
Cheddar cheese is the most popular choice for apple and cheddar strata, but other variations like Gouda or Swiss can be used as well.
Apples:
Thinly sliced apples are the star ingredient in this dish. Cinnamon or nutmeg may also be added to enhance the flavor of the apples.
Milk:
Milk is used to create a custard-like texture to the dish. Whole milk or half and half are common choices.
Optional ingredients:
Other ingredients like bacon, sausage, spinach, mushrooms, or onions can also be added to the dish.

Preparation

The preparation of apple and cheddar strata can vary depending on the recipe. However, most involve similar steps like:
Greasing a casserole dish:
The first step is to grease the bottom and sides of a casserole dish to prevent the ingredients from sticking.
Slicing the bread:
Slicing the bread into small pieces and layering them across the bottom of the dish.
Whisking the eggs:
In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and milk together until they are fully combined.
Layering the ingredients:
Begin layering the ingredients on top of the bread, starting with the apples, then cheese, and any additional ingredients like bacon or sausage.
Adding the custard:
Pour the egg and milk mixture on top of the layers, making sure it covers all of the ingredients.
Chilling:
Let the dish chill in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
Baking:
Preheat the oven to the recommended temperature and bake the strata for the allotted time, or until the top becomes golden brown and the custard is fully cooked.

Serving suggestions

Apple and cheddar strata can be enjoyed as a stand-alone dish or served with a variety of toppings or sides. Some ideas include:
Syrup:
Drizzling maple syrup on top of the dish can enhance the sweetness of the apples and add a bit of extra flavor.

Serving fresh fruit on the side can complement the dish and provide a healthy balance.

Tip #1: Choose the right bread

Choosing the right bread is important when making apple and cheddar strata. You want a bread that is sturdy enough to hold up to the eggs and apples, but not too dense that it becomes soggy. A good choice of bread would be sourdough, French bread, or challah. These types of bread are sturdy enough to hold up to the liquid in the recipe, but not too dense that it becomes soggy.

Tip #2: Use apples that hold up well in baking

When choosing apples for your apple and cheddar strata, it is important to choose apples that hold up well in baking. Some good choices of apples would be Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady. These apples hold up well in baking and will not become mushy when cooked.

Tip #3: Add other ingredients to enhance flavor

While the basic recipe for apple and cheddar strata is delicious on its own, adding other ingredients can enhance the flavor even more. Some great ingredients to add to your recipe include diced onions, bacon, or sausage. You can also add herbs like thyme, rosemary, or sage for added flavor.
