JOHNNY MARZETTI CASSEROLE

Johnny Marzetti Casserole image

Kids love this buffet-ready casserole dish. My mother-in-law used to make a simpler version of this for my husband when he was growing up. This version pushes the flavor profile a bit. I prefer to have this dish sit overnight before baking as the flavors improve and the pasta absorbs some of the sauce so the consistency is just right.

Time 1h55m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 12

8 ounces rotini pasta
1 pound ground beef
½ pound bulk mild Italian sausage
¾ cup chopped onion
¼ cup chopped celery
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tablespoon minced green bell pepper
salt and pepper to taste
1 (14.4 ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
2 cups shredded Italian cheese blend
1 ½ cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook until just al dente, 6 to 8 minutes; drain. Run cold water over the pasta to stop pasta from cooking further. Set aside.
  • Meanwhile, cook the ground beef and sausage until completely browned and crumbled, 7 to 10 minutes. Mix in the onion, celery, garlic, and pepper; continue to cook and stir another 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and stir in tomatoes and tomato sauce. Allow to cool five minutes.
  • Lightly grease a large casserole dish. Spread the pasta over the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle the Italian cheese blend over the pasta. Pour the meat mixture over the pasta and cheese. Cover dish with heavy aluminum foil. Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes; remove foil and sprinkle Cheddar cheese evenly over the casserole. Continue baking until Cheddar cheese has melted, about 5 minutes. Rest for 10 minutes before serving.

YUMZETTI/ JOHNNY MARZETTI

Yumzetti/ Johnny Marzetti image

A quick, easy, savory casserole. My grandmother always made this, and I loved it! I highly recommend making sure one or both cans of soup is low sodium, or it ends up tasting pretty salty, although you may prefer a higher sodium content. I also prefer to use ground turkey instead of beef; with all the other ingredients, it's impossible to tell the difference in taste.

JOHNNY MARZETTI

This classic casserole made with pasta, ground beef, and vegetables in a cheesy tomato sauce is perfect comfort food that can feed a crowd!

Provided by NeighborFood

Categories     Main Dish

Time 55m

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 lb. macaroni pasta
1 Tablespoon olive oil
1 yellow onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
8 ounces mushrooms, chopped
2 lbs. ground beef (or swap 1 lb. for Italian sausage)
Salt and pepper
2 (14 oz) cans tomato sauce
1 (14 oz) can diced tomatoes, drained
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon Italian herbs
Pinch sugar
2 cups cheddar cheese, divided
2 cups Italian blend cheese, divided

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Bring a large pot of water to boil for the macaroni. Cook the macaroni until on the firmer side of al dente, about 7 minutes. I like to under do it because it will continue to soften in the casserole. Drain the pasta, then return it to the pot and set aside.
  • In the meantime, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion, green pepper, and mushrooms to the skillet and saute until softened, about five minutes. Add the ground beef and cook until no pink remains. Drain the fat off the beef mixture, then season to taste with salt and pepper.
  • Add the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, garlic, oregano, Italian herbs, and sugar to the beef mixture. Allow it to simmer for five or so minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Carefully pour the beef mixture into the pot with the noodles and stir to combine. Add 1 cup of cheddar cheese and 1 cup of Italian blend to the mix. Pour the mixture into a 9 x 13 inch casserole dish. Top with the remaining 2 cups of cheese. Bake for 30 minutes, or until cheese is golden and melted. Top with parsley for serving.

JOHNNY MARZETTI

Johnny Marzetti image

I don't remember where I found this recipe, but it had been in my recipe box for quite awhile and I finally decided to try it. The original recipe makes 10 to 12 servings, so I kind of eyeballed the ingredients and measured to my liking for approximately 6 servings. I love mushrooms, so next time I make this I'll add another package. I added 2 tbsp of brown sugar because I like a slightly sweet tomato sauce. Feel free to omit it if you like your tomato sauce as is.

It is a comforting, satisfying meal that is perfect for families or anyone looking for a delicious homemade dish. With its simple ingredients and easy preparation, it is a recipe that should be in every cook's arsenal.
Amish Yumzetti Johnny Marzetti is a delightful dish that combines pasta, cheese, and meat into a comforting casserole that is perfect for a cold day. This dish has its roots in Ohio, where it was created in the 1920s by Teresa Marzetti, a school cafeteria worker. The dish was named in honor of her brother Johnny, who loved it so much that he asked for it every time he visited her. Today, the dish is popular in Amish communities across the Midwest, and it has become a classic American comfort food.

Tip #1: Use the Right Pasta

One of the keys to making a delicious Amish Yumzetti Johnny Marzetti is using the right pasta. Traditionally, this dish is made with elbow macaroni, which is a short, curved tube-shaped pasta that is perfect for holding onto the sauce and other ingredients. However, you can also use other types of pasta, such as penne or rotini, if you prefer.
Tip #1.1: Cook the Pasta Al Dente
It's important to cook the pasta al dente, which means "to the tooth" in Italian. This means that the pasta should be firm but not hard when you bite into it. Overcooked pasta will become mushy and won't hold up well in the casserole.
Tip #1.2: Rinse the Pasta
After cooking the pasta, rinse it under cold water to stop the cooking process and remove any excess starch. This will prevent the pasta from becoming gummy when you bake it in the casserole.

Tip #2: Choose High-Quality Cheese

Another important factor in making a delicious Amish Yumzetti Johnny Marzetti is using high-quality cheese. This dish is typically made with a combination of cheddar and mozzarella cheese, which creates a creamy and tangy flavor that complements the pasta and meat.
Tip #2.1: Grate the Cheese Yourself
To ensure that your cheese is of the highest quality, it's best to grate it yourself rather than buying pre-shredded cheese. Pre-shredded cheese often contains additives and preservatives that can affect the taste and texture of the final dish.
Tip #2.2: Use a Variety of Cheeses
While cheddar and mozzarella cheese are the traditional cheeses used in this dish, you can experiment with different types of cheeses, such as parmesan or provolone, for added flavor and depth.

Tip #3: Brown the Meat

The meat in Amish Yumzetti Johnny Marzetti is typically ground beef or sausage, which adds richness and depth to the dish. It's important to brown the meat before adding it to the casserole to ensure that it's fully cooked and has developed a deep, savory flavor.
Tip #3.1: Season the Meat
To add more flavor to your meat, season it with salt, pepper, and any other herbs or spices you like, such as garlic powder or paprika. This will enhance the overall flavor of the casserole.
Tip #3.2: Drain Excess Fat
After browning the meat, be sure to drain any excess fat before adding it to the casserole. Excess fat will make the casserole greasy and may affect the texture of the final dish.

Tip #4: Add Vegetables

Adding vegetables to your Amish Yumzetti Johnny Marzetti is a great way to increase its nutritional value and add more flavor and texture to the dish. Some popular vegetables to add include onions, green peppers, mushrooms, and zucchini.
Tip #4.1: Sauté the Vegetables First
Before adding the vegetables to the casserole, sauté them in a little butter or oil over medium heat until they are tender and slightly browned. This will enhance their natural flavors and ensure that they are fully cooked before baking.
Tip #4.2: Add Canned Tomatoes
To add even more flavor and texture to your casserole, add a can of diced tomatoes to the sauce. This will give the dish a slightly tangy and sweet flavor and will break up the creaminess of the cheese and pasta.

Tip #5: Bake the Casserole Properly

Baking the casserole properly is essential to achieving a creamy and delicious Amish Yumzetti Johnny Marzetti. Here are some tips to ensure that your casserole turns out perfectly:
Tip #5.1: Cover with Foil
Cover the casserole with foil before baking to prevent the cheese from burning and to allow the pasta to cook evenly. Remove the foil during the last 10-15 minutes of baking to allow the cheese to brown and become crispy.
Tip #5.2: Let it Rest
Once the casserole is done baking, let it rest for a few minutes before serving. This will allow the cheese to set and the flavors to meld together, resulting in a more cohesive and delicious dish.

Conclusion

Amish Yumzetti Johnny Marzetti is a delicious and comforting casserole that is perfect for a cold day or a family get-together. By following these tips, you can ensure that your casserole turns out perfectly every time. Remember to use high-quality ingredients, brown the meat, add vegetables, and bake the casserole properly to achieve a creamy and flavorful dish that your family and friends will love.
