Conventional potato chips provide a salty, crisp snack but are packed with excess fat because they are fried. These chips still provide a salty crispness but are made in an air fryer. The seasoning is just what I wanted, but you can use a ranch seasoning, truffle salt, garlic salt, etc. as well.

Time 1h

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 3

3 cups apple cider vinegar
1 pound red potatoes, thinly sliced on a mandoline
sea salt to taste

Steps:

  • Place vinegar in a large soup pot and bring to a boil. Add potatoes and boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, cover, and let sit for 30 minutes.
  • Line a baking sheet with paper towels. Drain potatoes but do not rinse. Arrange potato slices on the baking sheet, making sure none are overlapping. Cover the top of the potatoes with paper towels. Repeat layers until all potatoes have been dried.
  • Preheat an air fryer oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) according to manufacturer's instructions. Place the basket rack in the top slot. This will act as a shield so that the fan does not blow the chips around once they start to fry.
  • Arrange potatoes slices on the remaining 3 racks and lightly sprinkle with salt. Place racks in the air fryer oven and cook for 10 minutes. Remove the top rack of chips and transfer chips to a plate. Set timer for 2 more minutes and then remove the next highest rack of chips. Set timer for 1 minute for the final rack of chips. Serve immediately.

AIR FRYER POTATO CHIPS

Air Fryer Potato Chips image

These crunchy air-fryer potato chips are a salty, satisfying snack that's a cinch to cook up. A mandoline makes fast work of slicing the potatoes paper thin. Rinsing the sliced potatoes before cooking will remove most of the natural starch and prevent the chips from sticking together--don't skip this step.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Time 30m

Yield 2 to 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 3

2 Yukon gold potatoes (about 8 ounces each), scrubbed
1 tablespoon olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Thinly slice the potatoes on a mandoline, about 1/16 inch thick. Transfer to a medium bowl and run under cold water until almost all the white starch comes off and the water runs clear. Dry well between a couple paper towels. Dry the bowl as well.
  • Add the dry potatoes back to the dry bowl and toss with the oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper until evenly coated.
  • Preheat a 3.5-quart air fryer to 320 degrees F. Shingle the potatoes in the bottom of the basket; it's okay if there are two layers. Cook until the potatoes are deep golden brown around the edges and crisp, tossing every 5 minutes with tongs so they're evenly cooked, about 30 minutes. If you notice a few slices are finished cooking and completely crisp before others, remove to a large bowl and continue cooking the remaining pieces.
  • Season the chips with a pinch of salt. Serve immediately or let cool and store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Air Fryer Potato Chips Recipes: A Healthier Alternative to Traditional Chips

For those who love a salty and crispy snack, potato chips are a go-to choice. However, the downside to this beloved snack is that it is often high in fat and calories. Enter the air fryer, a kitchen appliance that has gained popularity in recent years for its ability to fry food with little to no oil. With an air fryer, creating perfectly crispy potato chips that are lower in fat and calories has never been easier.

The Basics of Making Air Fryer Potato Chips

To create air fryer potato chips, all that is needed are potatoes and a few basic seasonings. The type of potato used is up to personal preference, but some popular choices include Russet, Yukon Gold, and Sweet Potatoes. The potatoes are sliced thinly (use a mandoline for best results), then soaked in cold water for 30 minutes to remove excess starch. After patting the potatoes dry, they are seasoned with salt, pepper, and any other desired spices (e.g. garlic powder, paprika). The seasoned potatoes are then placed in a single layer in the air fryer basket and cooked at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-15 minutes, or until crispy and golden brown.

Tips for Making the Perfect Air Fryer Potato Chips

While making air fryer potato chips is relatively simple, there are a few tips and tricks that can help ensure a perfect result. These include:

  • Choosing the right potato: As previously mentioned, the type of potato used is a matter of personal preference, but it's important to choose a potato that is firm and not too starchy.
  • Soaking the potatoes: Soaking the potato slices in cold water for 30 minutes helps remove excess starch and results in a crispier chip.
  • Patting the potatoes dry: After soaking, it's important to thoroughly pat the potato slices dry to remove excess moisture.
  • Seasoning well: Don't be shy when seasoning the potatoes. Spices can add a lot of flavor to the chips and can help keep them from tasting bland.
  • Using a single layer: It's important not to overcrowd the air fryer basket when making potato chips. A single layer allows for even cooking and ensures crispy chips.
  • Checking frequently: It's easy to overcook the chips in an air fryer, so it's important to check on them frequently and adjust the cooking time as needed.
Health Benefits of Air Fryer Potato Chips

Compared to traditional potato chips, air fryer potato chips offer a number of health benefits. Firstly, because they are cooked with little to no oil, they contain significantly fewer calories and less fat. Additionally, the potatoes retain more of their nutrients when cooked in an air fryer. Potatoes are a good source of vitamins C and B6, potassium, and fiber, so choosing to make potato chips in an air fryer instead of buying pre-packaged chips can be a healthier option.

Variations on Air Fryer Potato Chips Recipes

While a simple salt and pepper seasoning is a classic choice for potato chips, there are endless variations on air fryer potato chip recipes. For those who like a bit of spice, adding cayenne pepper or chili powder can give the chips a kick. Garlic lovers can try adding garlic powder or freshly minced garlic to the seasoning mixture. Pesto lovers can toss the cooked chips in a bit of homemade or store-bought pesto for a flavorful twist. The possibilities are truly endless.

The Bottom Line

Air fryer potato chips are a healthier alternative to traditional potato chips that still offer the salty, crispy snack many crave. With a little bit of seasoning experimentation, air fryer potato chips can be a customizable snack that is perfect for any occasion.

Air fryer potato chips are a fun and healthier alternative to traditional fried potato chips. Air fryers have become very popular because they are easy and convenient to use, and they produce great-tasting crispy foods without the need for excess oil. However, making air fryer potato chips can be challenging if you do not follow the right process. In this article, we will provide you with valuable tips for making air fryer potato chips.

Choose the Right Potato

The first step to making great air fryer potato chips is to choose the right type of potato. You should choose a potato that is starchy and has a low water content. The best potatoes for air fryer potato chips are russet potatoes, as they have a high starch content and a dry flesh. Avoid using waxy potatoes like red potatoes or new potatoes.

Wash and Dry the Potatoes

Before making the potato chips, wash and dry the potatoes thoroughly. Scrub them well to remove any dirt and debris. Dry them with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels to remove any moisture. If you leave the potatoes wet, your potato chips will end up soggy instead of crispy.

Cut the Potatoes Thinly and Uniformly

You need to cut the potatoes into thin slices for them to cook evenly and become crispy. Use a mandolin or a sharp knife to slice the potatoes thinly and uniformly. Avoid cutting the slices too thick, as they will take longer to cook, and may not become crispy. Similarly, avoid cutting them too thin, as they will become burnt easily.

Soak the Potatoes in Water

After slicing the potatoes, soak them in a bowl of cold water for at least 30 minutes. Soaking the potatoes removes excess starch, which can cause them to stick together during cooking. It also ensures that your potato chips become crispy, not soggy.

Drain and Dry the Potatoes

After soaking the potatoes, remove them from the water and drain them completely. Pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels to remove any excess moisture. If you leave the potatoes wet, they will steam instead of frying and will become soggy.

Toss the Potatoes with Oil

To make your potato chips crispy, you need to use a small amount of oil. You can use any type of oil, but it must have a high smoke point to prevent it from burning. Olive oil is not recommended because it has a low smoke point. Toss the potatoes with a small amount of oil to coat them evenly. Do not use too much oil, as it can cause the potato chips to become greasy.

Preheat the Air Fryer

Before cooking the potato chips, preheat your air fryer to the desired temperature. The preheating process ensures that your air fryer is ready to cook your potato chips evenly. It also helps to create a crispy texture on the outside while keeping the inside soft and tender.

Cook the Potato Chips in Batches

To cook the potato chips evenly, you should cook them in small batches. Overcrowding the air fryer basket can cause the potato chips to stick together and cook unevenly, resulting in some chips being overcooked while others are undercooked. Cook the potato chips in batches, shaking the basket occasionally to ensure that they cook evenly.

Season the Potato Chips with Salt and Spices

Once the potato chips are cooked, season them with salt and any other spices you desire. Salt brings out the natural flavor of the potato chips, and spices add extra flavor and complexity. Be careful not to over-season the potato chips, as doing so can overpower the flavor.

Store the Potato Chips Properly

If you have leftovers, store the potato chips in an airtight container at room temperature. You can also store them in the refrigerator, but they may lose their crispiness. Reheat the potato chips in the air fryer or oven to restore their crispiness.

Conclusion

Making air fryer potato chips is easy, but it requires some preparation and attention to detail. By following these valuable tips, you can create crispy and delicious potato chips that are healthier than traditional fried chips. Choose the right potato, cut it thinly and uniformly, soak it in water, and toss it with a small amount of oil. Cook the potato chips in batches, and season them with salt and spices. Store the potato chips properly to maintain their crispiness. With these tips, you can make perfect air fryer potato chips every time!
