Air Fryer Chicken Wings image

Skip the deep-fryer and forget soggy oven chicken wings. The air fryer offers the best of both worlds for crispy wings without extra fat!

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     appetizer

Time 40m

Yield 2 to 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

Nonstick cooking spray, for the basket
2 pounds chicken wings, split at the joint and tips removed
Kosher salt
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup hot sauce, such as Frank's RedHot
Ranch or blue cheese dressing, for serving

Steps:

  • Spray the basket of a 3.5-quart air fryer with cooking spray and set aside. Pat the chicken wings dry and sprinkle generously with salt. Place the wings in the fryer basket so they are not touching (if necessary to fit, line up the drumettes standing upright along the sides). Set the air fryer to 360 degrees F and cook for 12 minutes, then flip the wings with tongs and cook for 12 minutes more. Flip the wings again, increase the heat to 390 degrees F and cook until the outsides are extra-crispy, about 6 minutes more.
  • Meanwhile, warm the butter in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave until melted, about 1 minute. Whisk in the hot sauce.
  • Toss the wings with the butter mixture to coat in a large bowl and serve with dressing on the side.

Air fryer buffalo chicken totchos are an absolutely delicious dish that can be enjoyed as a snack or a meal. This dish combines two all-time favorite snacks – tater tots and buffalo chicken – and turns them into one incredible appetizer. It is easy to make, and the best thing about it is that it can be customized to your taste. However, there are a few valuable tips that you should keep in mind when making air fryer buffalo chicken totchos recipes. In this article, we’ll share these tips to help you prepare a dish that is drool-worthy.

Tip #1: Choosing the Right Tater Tots

The first and most important thing to consider when making air fryer buffalo chicken totchos is the type of tater tots you use. There are several options available in the market, including traditional potato tater tots, sweet potato tater tots, and even cauliflower tater tots. Whatever option you choose, make sure they are crispy because the crispier the tots, the better the dish will be. While you can buy frozen tater tots from the supermarket, you can also make homemade tater tots from scratch, which is undoubtedly healthier.

Tip #2: Preparing the Chicken

The second tip when making air fryer buffalo chicken totchos is preparing the chicken. You can use shredded chicken or chicken tenders. For shredded chicken, the best cut of chicken is the boneless, skinless thigh because it is juicier and more flavorful than the leaner chicken breast. Poaching the chicken for shredded chicken is the best cooking method as it ensures that the chicken remains juicy and doesn’t dry out. On the other hand, for chicken tenders, you can marinate them in buffalo sauce for at least an hour before air frying them. This will infuse them with flavor and ensure they are tender and juicy when cooked.

Tip #3: Choosing the Right Cheese

The third tip is choosing the right cheese to use in your air fryer buffalo chicken totchos. A common and perfect cheese option for this dish is shredded cheddar cheese. However, you can also use any other cheese, such as blue cheese, that suits your taste. It’s best to use shredded cheese instead of melted cheese because it provides better texture and flavor to the dish.

Tip #4: Adding the Right Toppings

The fourth tip is adding the right toppings to your air fryer buffalo chicken totchos. The most common toppings include green onions, crumbled bacon, diced tomatoes, and ranch dressing. Besides, other toppings that can add flavor, texture, and visual appeal to the dish, depending on your preference, are jalapenos, sour cream, cilantro, and avocado.

Tip #5: Air Frying the Tots and Chicken

The fifth and final tip is air frying the tater tots and chicken in your air fryer. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F, then place your tater tots in the basket in a single layer. Cook for around 10-12 minutes or until they are crispy and golden brown. While the tater tots are cooking, place your chicken tenders or shredded chicken in the same basket and cook for 4-5 minutes, flipping halfway through or until cooked through. Make sure you don’t overcrowd the basket to ensure even cooking. After cooking the chicken and tots, place them in an oven-safe dish, sprinkle shredded cheese over them, and add your desired toppings, then place them in your air fryer for another 2-3 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
Conclusion
With this guide, you are now equipped with valuable tips for making air fryer buffalo chicken totchos recipes. Remember, the key to an excellent dish is choosing the right tater tots, preparing the chicken well, using the right cheese, and adding the right toppings. With these tips in mind, you can create delicious and mouth-watering air fryer buffalo chicken totchos that you and your family will love.
