NEW YORK SYSTEM WEINER RECIPE
The hot wiener or New York System wiener, also commonly hot weiner, is a staple of the food culture of Rhode Island. It is typically made from a small, thin frankfurter made of veal and pork, thus giving it a different taste from a traditional hot dog made of beef. Once placed in a steamed bun, the wiener is topped with a meat...

Steps:
- 1. Lightly brown half of the chopped onion in butter. Add hamburger and stir until the hamburger loosens into small pieces. Add rest of spices. Simmer on very low heat for at least 2 hours.
- 2. Now it's time to build the weiner. The sequence is important! 1.) Put cooked weiner in bun. 2.) Put mustard on weiner. 3.) Put sauce on mustard. 4.) Put raw chopped onions on mustard. 5.) Sprinkle celery salt on top of onions.
- 3. Hint: Throw your weiner buns in a microwave for five seconds to approximate that wonderful steam table sponginess.
- 4. NOTE: The most authentic weiner is that made by Little Rhody Brand Frankfurts of Johnston, Rhode Island, the company that supplies weiners to all of the New York System-style restaurants in the state. If these aren't available to you, experiment with whatever you can find in your local grocery store, but steer away from jumbo-sized franks and anything smoked or filled with cheese!

NEW YORK SYSTEM HOT WIENER SAUCE I
This hearty, flavorful wiener sauce is like the kind you'll find in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. It may be frozen until ready for use. Use premium grilled wieners cooked in butter, steamed hot dog buns and the fancy mustard of your choice. Spread with mustard, the sauce, chopped onions and celery salt... in that order. If you have a delicate digestive system, use with caution.

VEGAN NY SYSTEM HOT WIENERS
Call me crazy, but I somehow felt the need to veganize these wretched things!! And ya know, they turned out quite amazing, if I do say so myself... For those of you who have not had the pleasure, "Hot Wieners" are a Rhode Island classic. Anyone who's ANYONE in little RI has gorged themselves late-night on these dogs, which consist of a hot dog served on a STEAMED bun, then topped with quite a "distinct" flavor of meat sauce, mustard, raw minced onions and celery salt. My inspiration for the "meat" sauce was from Guy Fieri's recipe for: Hot Weiners Rhode Island Style! I lowered his amount of cinnamon, AND his amounts for chili powder and paprika because they seemed a bit much for vegetarian crumbles. DO NOT omit the raw onions, yellow mustard OR the celery salt. This is what makes these dogs a classic Rhode Island treat, whether it's vegan or not!!
