Easy Homemade Taco Sauce image

This recipe for easy homemade taco sauce is a copycat recipe for Ortega brand taco sauce and can easily be made with a can of tomato sauce plus a few spices!

1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 teaspoon ancho chile powder
1 teaspoon cumin
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
½ teaspoon chile powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon oregano
¼ teaspoon cayenne
½ teaspoon sugar
¼ cup water
2 teaspoons lime juice

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients through the water in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the lime juice. Cool slightly. Transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator up to 2 weeks.

This taco sauce recipe comes together quickly and has amazing flavor! It's like your favorite jarred version...but better.

1/2 cup tomato sauce (small batch; or double for 1 1/2 cups sauce!)*
1 cup water
2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon white vinegar
1 (mild) to 2 (medium) teaspoons hot sauce
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon cumin
2 teaspoons cornstarch

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan, whisk together tomato sauce, water, 2 tablespoons white vinegar, hot sauce, sugar, salt, garlic powder, onion powder and cumin. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to low or medium low. Simmer where the sauce is steadily bubbling for 15 minutes.
  • After 15 minutes, stir the cornstarch into 1 tablespoon water in a small bowl until dissolved. Add the cornstarch slurry to the taco sauce and cook for an additional 1 minute, stirring constantly, until the sauce becomes thick and glossy. Remove from the heat and stir in the additional 1 teaspoon vinegar. Store refrigerated; it will thicken even more as it cools.

This started out as a Paula Deen recipe, or at least part of one. This is my adapted version of the sauce she uses on her Gator Tators.

1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup sour cream
1 medium sweet onion, chopped fine
1/4-1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 dash Tabasco sauce
1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
salt

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients together.
  • Chill.
  • Serve on baked potatoes, as a dip for french fries or tator tots. Also good on hot dogs and hamburgers, or most anything else!

2 teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon ground cumin
3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
3/4 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat; simmer, uncovered, until thickened slightly, 5-7 minutes. Cool slightly. Transfer to an airtight container, refrigerate up to 3 days.
