ONION PHYLLO TART

I have not yet tried this, but it was posted on a message board I frequent and it sounded so good that I decided to post it here for safekeeping. Credit goes to "lo" at simpleliving.net/forums. Times and servings are estimates.

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 package phyllo dough, thawed overnight in fridge
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/2 lbs yellow onions, thinly sliced on a half-round (about 4-5 cups)
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons brown sugar
3 eggs, beaten
1 cup sour cream
2 teaspoons dill
1 tablespoon flour
1/2 cup swiss cheese
4 tablespoons parmesan cheese
2 teaspoons melted butter

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375ºF Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add onions, garlic and sugar and saute 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are very brown and very soft (caramelized).
  • Mix beaten eggs, sour cream, dill, flour, swiss and 2 Tbs of the parmesan in a large bowl.
  • Add the caramelized onions to the egg mixture and mix until well combined.
  • Take two sheets of phyllo dough and lay them into the bottom of a greased 8-10 inch springform pan.
  • Brush with butter or spray with oil.
  • Take another two sheets and lay them over the pan in the other direction.
  • Spray with oil or brush with butter.
  • Be sure that the bottom and sides of pan are covered with phyllo.
  • When phyllo is laid in pan, pour in egg and onion mixture.
  • Pull phyllo dough over mixture to cover (use additional sheets of phyllo if necessary).
  • Brush top with 2 tsp butter and sprinkle with remaining (2 Tbs) parmesan cheese.
  • Bake at 375 for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Allow to sit for 5 minutes, then release springform and let sit for 5 more minutes before slicing.
  • Serve hot or at room temperature.

4 tablespoons butter
1 Vidalia onion or other sweet onion, diced, about 3 cups
1 box (15-ounce) refrigerated pie crust (recommended: Pillsbury)
1 large egg
1/3 cups half-and-half
1/2 (1.3-ounce) envelope golden onion soup mix (recommended: Lipton)
1 teaspoon fine herbs (recommended: Spice Islands)
1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
  • Melt butter in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add onions and cook until golden brown. Set aside to cool. Unroll pie dough 1 at a time. Use a 2 1/2-inch round cutter and cut as many rounds as possible (about 14 to 16), reserving scraps repeat with second pie dough. Gather together scrap dough and cut out as many rounds as needed to make 24 in total. Fit dough rounds into cups of mini muffin pan. Place in the oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove and set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, half-and-half, golden onion soup mix, and fines herbs. Set aside. Divide onions among tartlet shells, about 1/2 teaspoon each. Stir the egg mixture and fill tartlets to cover the onions. Top each with 1/2 teaspoon of cheese. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes.

1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon butter
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 package (17.3 ounces) frozen puff pastry, thawed
1 cup shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons minced fresh thyme or 2 teaspoons dried thyme

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, saute onion in oil and butter until softened. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook, uncovered, for 40 minutes or until deep golden brown, stirring occasionally. Add garlic; cook 1 minute longer. Stir in salt and pepper., Unfold each puff pastry sheet onto an ungreased baking sheet. Using a knife, score decorative lines around the edges of each pastry. Spread onion mixture to within 1/2 in. of edges. Sprinkle with cheeses and thyme., Bake at 400° for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Cut each tart into 12 pieces. Serve warm.

2 tablespoons butter
2 large sweet onions (sliced or diced thinly)
3/4 cup hot water
1 tablespoon beef bouillon (or 3 cubes)
2 (2 ounce) packages frozen miniature phyllo cups (15 shells per package)
1 cup shredded swiss cheese

Steps:

  • In a large saute pan, sweat the onions in the butter and sugar until browned and softened, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Add the hot water and bouillon and bring mixture to a boil.
  • Turn heat down and simmer uncovered until liquid has been reduced, approximately 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Set mixture aside to cool a bit and then add cheese, stirring well to incorporate.
  • Place about 1 heaping teaspoon measure into each phyllo cup.
  • Bake in a preheated 375* oven for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Can be served hot or room temperature.
