1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup chopped celery
1/3 cup chopped onion
2 tablespoons chopped green pepper
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup chili sauce
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
2 teaspoons ground mustard
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
6 hamburger buns, split

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook the beef, celery, onion and green pepper over medium heat until meat is no longer pink and vegetables are tender; drain. , Stir in the ketchup, chili sauce, sugars, vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes. Serve on buns.

These smoky, spicy Sloppy Joes are made completely from scratch -- no ketchup or seasoning packets -- and they make an easy weeknight dinner.

1¼ pounds 90% lean ground beef
½ teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for buns
1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
1 small red bell pepper, finely diced
3 cloves garlic, roughly chopped
¾ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1½ teaspoons smoked paprika
¾ teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon dried oregano
¾ teaspoon dry mustard
1 (14-oz) can tomato sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
½ teaspoon hot pepper sauce, such as Tabasco or Frank's, or to taste
Hamburger buns

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, using your hands, mash the beef with the baking soda. Let it sit on the counter for 20 to 25 minutes to tenderize.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and set a rack in the middle position.
  • Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat until bubbling. Add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic and cook, stirring frequently, until softened, 4 to 6 minutes.
  • Add the beef, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, cumin, oregano, and dry mustard and cook, breaking up meat with wooden spoon, until mostly brown, about 3 minutes. Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce. Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, until the sauce is thickened, about 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, butter the inside of the buns and place on a baking sheet, butter side up. Toast in the oven until warmed through and lightly crispy, about 5 minutes.
  • Taste the sloppy Joe mixture and adjust seasonings. (If you like your Sloppy Joes sweet, feel free to add 1 teaspoon of brown sugar.) Spoon the mixture onto the toasted hamburger buns and serve.
  • Freezer-Friendly Instructions: The meat mixture can be frozen for up to 3 months and reheated in the microwave om on the stovetop until hot.

2 teaspoons canola oil
3 pounds ground turkey
1 large onion, chopped
1/2 medium green pepper, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
3 cups ketchup
2/3 cup water
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons spicy brown mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
12 hamburger buns, split
Optional: Coleslaw and dill pickle slices

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Cook turkey in batches until no longer pink, breaking into crumbles, 8-10 minutes per batch. Transfer meat to a 5- or 6-qt. slow cooker. In the same skillet, cook the onion and green pepper until tender, 2-3 minutes. Add garlic, Worcestershire and red pepper flakes; cook 1 minute longer. Transfer to slow cooker. , In a bowl, combine ketchup, water, brown sugar, mustard, salt and pepper; pour over meat. Cover and cook on low 4-5 hours or until flavors are blended. 1 small white onion, chopped
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1/4 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 orange, juice of (about 1/4 cup)
1/2 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or to taste)

Steps:

  • In a large skillet brown ground beef and onion over medium heat.

1 cup yellow sweet onion
1 cup yellow bell pepper
1/4 cup crushed pineapple
1 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons honey mustard

4 -6 slices muenster cheese

Steps:

  • In deep skillet brown the ground beef.
  • While the meat cooks mix ketchup, mustard, vinager, sugar, and clove in a bowl.
  • Once browned add onion, pepper, and pineapple to the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes.
  • After 5 minutes add ketchup mixture to beef. Mix well, cover and simmer for 30 minutes stirring occasionally.
  • Put on sweet bread and top with cheese.

1 jalapeno pepper, sliced

12 dinner or slider rolls, split
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup salsa verde
1-1/2 cups shredded sharp white cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • In a large cast-iron or other heavy skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink, 8-10 minutes, breaking into crumbles; drain. Add water, taco seasoning, pepper sauce and steak sauce; cook and stir until sauce thickens, 2-4 minutes. Remove and keep warm., In another skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add onion, green pepper, mango, jalapeno, sugar and salt; cook and stir until lightly browned, 8-10 minutes., Meanwhile, place rolls, cut side up, on an ungreased baking sheet. Broil 3-4 in. from heat until golden brown, 2-3 minutes. Spread with melted butter. Combine mayonnaise and salsa verde; spread over roll bottoms.
