BAKED HAM WITH BROWN SUGAR AND APPLE GLAZE

Baked Ham With Brown Sugar and Apple Glaze image

This is an outstanding ham recipe and has become a family favorite! The ham can even be fully cooked, covered and refrigerated up to 2 days ahead of time, and you can prepare the glaze a day ahead also. Remember save the bone from the ham and freeze for pea soup! Purchase a butt-portion ham (water-added) that is wrapped in heavy plastic for this, the butt is the best! Cooking time is for the last stage of cooking the ham, prep time includes the first cooking of the ham and making the sauce.

BAKED HAM WITH BALSAMIC BROWN SUGAR GLAZE

Baked Ham with Balsamic Brown Sugar Glaze image

A gorgeous, juicy ham is the centerpiece of many holiday tables, and we think that this simple (and simply stunning, when you taste it) recipe should be the next one you try. It starts with a pre-cooked ham (which you can learn more about in our handy article that covers all the details of how to cook a ham) and from there, an easy glaze does the work of adding flavor and a glossy appearance. Sweet-on-sweet glazes were more popular in the past, but this updated-yet-accessible version strikes an ideal balance between sweet and acidic, the perfect complements to naturally salty ham. The hardest part about this six-ingredient recipe? Waiting to carve yourself a succulent slice-after all, a good host lets their guests go first.

Provided by JackieOhNo

Categories     Ham

BAKED HAM WITH A BROWN SUGAR, RUM AND CAYENNE GLAZE

Baked Ham With a Brown Sugar, Rum and Cayenne Glaze image

This spicy-sweet glaze is brushed on during baking to give the ham a golden brown appearance and to compliment the meat. The drippings are used to make a sauce to serve along side the ham slices. Use the glaze partway through cooking to prevent the sugars in the glaze from scorching.

Provided by Karen From Colorado

Categories     Ham

Time 3h30m

Yield 8-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

12 lbs ham, bone in
1/4 cup whole cloves, for studding
2 cups apple cider
2 cups water
1 1/2 cups light brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 cup dark rum
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
1/8-1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Using a large knife, cut off the skin and all but 1/4 inch of the fat from the ham, leaving the surface as smooth as possible.
  • Score the top and sides of the ham diagonally in two opposite directions about 1 1/2 inches apart, creating a diamond pattern.
  • Stick a clove into the corners of each diamond.
  • Place the ham on a rack in a roasting pan.
  • Add the apple cider and 2 cups water to the pan; bake for 2 hours, adding more water after an hour if needed.
  • While ham bakes, combine the brown sugar, rum, salt and cayenne pepper to taste in a bowl; stir until smooth; let stand for 10 minutes to allow sugar to dissolve partially.
  • Remove ham from the oven and brush the glaze evenly over the ham; reserve the leftover glaze.
  • Return the ham to the oven and bake for 1 hour longer, brushing with the glaze every 15 minutes.
  • Transfer ham to a large platter and cover loosely with foil; allow to rest for 15 to 30 minutes.
  • While ham rests, pour the liquid from the roasting pan into a fat separator or a large glass measuring pitcher; let the fat rise to the surface, then pour or spoon off as much fat as possible; float a piece of paper towel on the surface to absorb the remaining fat.
  • Pour the degreased liquid into a small saucepan and add the remaining glaze to make a sauce; rewarm and pour in a sauceboat.
  • Serve ham warm with the sauce.

BROWN SUGAR AND MUSTARD BAKED HAM

Brown Sugar and Mustard Baked Ham image

This recipe may sound a bit strange, but my family has been making baked ham this way for generations and everyone loves it! It has a wonderful flavor and is so tender and never dry. It's always a huge hit and so simple to make. Prep and cooking time is based on a 6 pound ham, but any size ham can be used. The idea is to cover the ham with mustard and brown sugar, so amounts should be adjusted depending upon the size of the ham. I noticed in the nutrition information that shows one serving to be 1000 calories! I'm certain this is not correct and probably is figuring the bone in the serving size. Don't be afraid to try it! :-)

Categories     Ham

Time 2h10m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 (6 lb) bone-in ham
1 (12 ounce) can 7-Up soda or 1 (12 ounce) can ginger ale
1/4 cup yellow mustard
1/2 cup brown sugar

Steps:

  • Rinse ham in water. I find some brands of ham are saltier than others so ham can be soaked in water for one hour to prevent saltiness.
  • Pat ham dry and place flat (cut) side down in roasting pan.
  • Pour entire can of 7UP or ginger ale over ham.
  • Bake in 325°F oven for 20 minutes per pound.
  • Baste ham every 1/2 hour.
  • When there is about 20 minutes left to cook, take ham out and cover the entire ham (except the flat side) with yellow mustard. I just squirt it out of the bottle all over the ham and then spread it with a spatula. Then cover ham with the brown sugar. For this I usually use my hands.
  • Return ham to the oven until cooking time is finished. Do not baste after mustard and brown sugar have been added.
  • Put on platter and slice. Ham juices from pan can be served in a gravy boat to drizzle over sliced ham.

BAKED HAM WITH BROWN SUGAR AND MUSTARD GLAZE

Baked Ham With Brown Sugar and Mustard Glaze image

Besides a roasting pan, you don't need any fancy gadgets to make this baked ham. By cooking the ham in the drippings, it's moist and juicy when baked. The sticky, sweet, and tangy glaze penetrates the meat. The sweet mustard glaze melts into the salty drippings making the ham full of flavor and creates the most amazing tangy...

Provided by Kitchen Crew

Categories     Pork

Time 1h10m

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 stick unsalted butter
1 c packed brown sugar
3 Tbsp yellow mustard
1 fully cooked/smoked spiral sliced ham

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Take the ham out of the refrigerator and let sit on the counter for 30 minutes to cut the chill.
  • 2. Over med-low heat, melt butter in a small saucepan.
  • 3. Add the brown sugar and mix into the melted butter.
  • 4. Then add the mustard.
  • 5. Once the mustard is incorporated, cook on med-low heat stirring constantly for a few minutes until the sugar melts and is a loose consistency. Make sure it does not boil. (You don't want to make caramel.)
  • 6. Unwrap the ham. Place in a roasting pan. Brush about 1/2 of the glaze on the ham.
  • 7. Separate the slices and get the glaze in-between the layers. Set the rest aside for later.
  • 8. Push the layers back together and cover the ham tightly with foil to keep the moisture in. Bake for about 15 minutes per pound. Bear in mind, the ham is fully cooked. You're not actually cooking the ham, only reheating it.
  • 9. Using drippings, baste every 30 minutes, or as often as you like, with a spoon or a brush.
  • 10. In the last 15 to 20 minutes, do one final glaze of the ham. Before glazing, stir and reheat the leftover glaze for a couple of minutes on medium-low.
  • 11. Take out the ham out of the oven and pour the reheated glaze onto the ham.
  • 12. Brush glaze across the ham to spread it out.
  • 13. Increase the temperature to 350 and cook uncovered for a final 15 to 20 minutes.
  • 14. In order to easily serve the ham, cut in a circular motion around the bone deep into the ham and the slices will come right off.

BAKED HAM W/PINEAPPLE & BROWN SUGAR

Baked Ham w/Pineapple & Brown Sugar image

For years I had no clue how to properly bake a ham that would be full of flavor and just melt in your mouth. I created this recipe by accident, and now it is a family favorite for Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Hope you and your family and friends love it as much as mine do. Happy Cooking!

Provided by Janette Suber

Categories     Other Main Dishes

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 large bone in picnic ham (smoked or fresh)
2- 12oz bottle pepsi cola
3 can(s) pineapple tidbits or chunks
2 Tbsp spicy brown mustard (this is just a guesstimate, i usually squeeze it in till i have a half dollar size mound)
1 c brown sugar, firmly packed

Steps:

  • 1. I generally start baking my ham very late at night, or really early in the morning say around 6am. I bake it in a 250 degree oven, and I let it cook for a few hours. You are probably saying to yourself, that is too long for a ham to cook or a smoked ham especially. Trust me, it comes out delicious.
  • 2. Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Place ham in large deep roasting pan. (If you purchased a ham that has a flat side, DO NOT put flat side down, this will cause the ham to burn and be very dry.) Pour both bottles of Pepsi over the ham. Cover with heavy duty aluminum foil, sealing it tight around the edges, put on lid. Place in oven and bake for about 3 hours.
  • 3. At the 3 hour mark, remove ham from oven (save foil if possible, you will need it again). Drain off all the juices into a metal or heat resistant plastic bowl, and set aside.
  • 4. In a separate bowl, mix pineapple (strain pineapple juice out of 1 of the cans, save one can of pineapple juice for mixture), brown sugar, and spicy brown mustard. Whisk all ingredients together until mustard is mixed well. Add 3 cups of the juices from ham (if you own an oil separator it comes in handy here), mix well. Taste the mixture to see if it needs more brown sugar or more spicy brown mustard. You want the mixture to be sweet and tart. Pour the mixture over the ham, place ham back in oven and let cook another hour or 2. If you want the pineapple sauce to be like gravy then you could add some corn starch to thicken it up. I just leave it as is.
  • 5. Once ham is done, remove from oven and place on a platter or serving tray. Use a slotted spoon to remove all the pineapple into a serving bowl then ladle some of the juice over the pineapple to serve with the ham.
  • 6. This ham is great with your favorite Thanksgiving dressing, cranberry sauce and baked sweet potato souffle' or any time. I bake this ham for Easter dinner with Au Gratin/Scalloped Cheesy Potatoes, Garlic Green Beans and Rolls. My family loves it. Enjoy!!

SUGAR BAKED HAM

Sugar Baked Ham image

Since finding this recipe, it's become my favorite way to cook ham. My family loves the crunchy crust that bakes on the ham...very yummy! The recipe came from a cookbooklet that I received in one of our swaps. Very Important Note: be sure to use a fully cooked cured ham which only needs to warmed through for this recipe.
