Almond Stuffed Dates image

An easy and delicious snack or dessert, great put on cookie trays! Serving dates stuffed with nuts and bowls of warm milk to visitors is a symbol of hospitality in North African homes. African, and posted for the ZWT.

Number Of Ingredients 5

12 dates
12 blanched almonds
1/3 cup honey
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 pinch black pepper

Steps:

  • Carefully remove the pits from the dates, replacing each one with a whole almond.
  • Pour the honey into a heavy saucepan and place it on low heat.
  • When the honey is liquid, add the cinnamon and pepper; stir well.
  • Put the stuffed dates in the honey and stir gently to coat. Leave on very low heat for 5 minutes until the dates are hot. Watch the sauce so that it doesn't boil or even simmer.
  • Serve warm, or let cool and eat. Enjoy!

30 whole almonds or 30 pecans
powdered sugar (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat an oven to 350°F.
  • Place the nuts on a baking pan in the middle rack of the oven. Bake
  • for 15 minutes or until fragrant, stirring frequently.
  • Cool for 10 minutes before use.
  • Place one almond or pecan inside the date. Roll in powdered sugar if
  • desired. Place on wax paper-lined baking sheet and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.

This is a recipe that my mother makes as a quick appetizer for special occasions. It may seem like an odd combination of flavors at first, but trust me, these can be addictive!

cream cheese
pecans, per date

Steps:

  • "Butterfly"the dates, making sure that they are still attached along one side Spread the dates open and fill with a generous amount of cream cheese.
  • Place a pecan over the filling.
  • Close the date, shaping it back into its original shape.
  • Eat and enjoy!

I found this recipe looking for Middle Eastern recipes for ZWT6 and realized that as far back as I can remember this was exactly the way my mom and paternal grandmother made stuffed dates for the holidays using our Louisiana pecans. So very good considering its simplicity.

sugar or unsweetened dried shredded coconut

Steps:

  • Open up center of each Date.
  • Place nuts in center of each date and close up.
  • Roll each date in sugar or coconut.
  • Make as many as you want.
