Number Of Ingredients 11

1 package (16 ounces) dried green split peas
1 package (16 ounces) dried yellow split peas
1 package (16 ounces) dried lentils, rinsed
1 package (16 ounces) medium pearl barley
1 package (12 ounces) alphabet pasta
1 jar (1/2 ounce) dried celery flakes
1/2 cup dried parsley flakes
ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS:
4 cups chicken broth
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 cup cubed cooked chicken, optional

Steps:

  • Combine the first 7 ingredients. Transfer to airtight containers, or divide equally among 13 plastic bags. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 1 year.Yield: 13 batches (13 cups total). , To prepare soup: In a large saucepan, combine 1 cup soup mix with broth, pepper and, if desired, cubed chicken. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, covered, until peas and lentils are tender, 1 to 1-1/4 hours.

This is a wonderful, hearty split pea soup. Great for a fall or blustery winter day.

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 ¼ cups dried split peas
2 quarts cold water
1 ½ pounds ham bone
2 onions, thinly sliced
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 pinch dried marjoram
3 stalks celery, chopped
3 carrots, chopped
1 potato, diced

Steps:

  • In a large stock pot, cover peas with 2 quarts cold water and soak overnight. If you need a faster method, simmer the peas gently for 2 minutes, and then soak for l hour.
  • Once peas are soaked, add ham bone, onion, salt, pepper and marjoram. Cover, bring to boil and then simmer for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove bone; cut off meat, dice and return meat to soup. Add celery, carrots and potatoes. Cook slowly, uncovered for 30 to 40 minutes, or until vegetables are tender.

2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed

5 teaspoons chicken bouillon granules
1 teaspoon dried marjoram
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1 teaspoon rubbed sage
1/2 to 1 teaspoon pepper

1 tablespoon olive oil
2 cups chopped onion
2 cups chopped carrot
2 cups finely chopped celery
½ tablespoon minced garlic
1 cup yellow split peas
1 cup green split peas
8 cups fat-free chicken broth
1 ½ teaspoons salt-free seasoning blend
1 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • In a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, heat olive oil. Cook onion, carrot, celery and garlic until onion is translucent. Stir in yellow and green split peas, broth, seasoning and salt. 2/3 cup dried cheese-filled egg tortellini
1/4 cup dried tomatoe, snipped
1/3 cup dried split peas
1/2 cup chopped dried carrots
1 tablespoon chicken bouillon granule
1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil, crushed
1 1/2 teaspoons dried thyme, crushed
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon pepper, ground

Steps:

  • Layer ingredients in a clean 1-pint jar.
  • Suggested order: tortellini, tomatoes, peas, carrots, boullion, onion, basil, thyme, garlic powder, pepper.
  • For Use: Empty jar ingredients into a 3-Qt saucepan.
  • Add 5 cups water.
  • Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer.
  • Cover ans immer for about 50 minutes, or until peas are tender.
  • If desired add 1 cup chopped cooked ham or sausage If you have a hard time finding dried carrots, they are availiable by the"Just Tomatoes, Etc.
  • "brand (available for order online at www. justtomatoes. com) which are available at a lot of stores and health food markets now adays (I've even seen them at pet stores), but if that's too much of a pain, I would just add"add chopped carrots" to the directions.
  • As for the dried onions, if you can't find those, you can add a little bit of onion powder to the recipe (~1/2tsp) or add"Add diced onion" to the directions.
