This is the recipe my mother used for sloppy joes and it always gets compliments!

1 pound lean ground beef
¼ cup chopped onion
¼ cup chopped green bell pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
¾ cup ketchup
3 teaspoons brown sugar
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • In a medium skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, onion, and green pepper; drain off liquids.
  • Stir in the garlic powder, mustard, ketchup, and brown sugar; mix thoroughly. Reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

2 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 large green bell pepper, diced
1/2 large onion, diced
1 1/2 cups ketchup
5 cloves garlic, minced
Hot sauce, such as Tabasco
Worcestershire sauce
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
8 kaiser rolls
2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons chili powder, or more as needed
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or more as needed
2 tablespoons butter, softened
Chips or salad, for serving, if desired

Steps:

  • Start by browning the ground beef in a large pot over medium-high heat. Drain off the fat.
  • Add in the green peppers and onions. Stir, and then add 1 cup water, the ketchup and garlic. Stir it around to combine, and then add the brown sugar, chili powder, dry mustard, red pepper flakes, and hot sauce, Worcestershire, salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine, and then cover and simmer over medium-low heat, about 20 minutes.
  • To serve, spread the rolls with the butter and brown them on a griddle or in a skillet. Spoon a good amount of the meat mixture onto the bottom roll, and then top with the other half. Serve with chips, salad or just enjoy it by itself.

We perfer this over the Sloppy Joe mixes. Quick and easy. Even better the next day. I also will use cooked shredded roast beef instead of ground chuck, makes it even easier.

1 3/4 lbs ground chuck, crumbled
kosher salt, to taste
black pepper, to taste
1 1/2 cups del monte brand diced tomatoes with green pepper and onion
1/2 tablespoon tomato puree
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
1 -2 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons onions, finely chopped
1/2 cup celery, finely chopped

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook beef mixture till done - drain some of the fat and set aside.
  • In a medium saucepan over low heat, stir sauce ingredients till blended, adjust to taste. Add sauce to beef skillet, stirring to combine. Simmer 25 minutes.
  • Serve on rolls of your choice.

1-1/2 pounds ground beef
2 celery ribs, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
1 bottle (12 ounces) chili sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
8 hamburger buns, split

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook beef, celery and onion over medium-high heat, 8-10 minutes, until beef is no longer pink, breaking beef into crumbles; drain. Transfer to a 3-qt. slow cooker., Stir in chili sauce, brown sugar, pickle relish, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Cook, covered, on low 3-4 hours or until heated through and flavors are blended. Spoon meat mixture onto bun bottoms. Replace tops.
