Steps:
- Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- In a medium bowl, mix flour, 1/3 cup sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Grate butter into flour mixture on the large holes of a box grater; use your fingers to work in butter (mixture should resemble coarse meal), then stir in raisins.
- In a small bowl, whisk sour cream and egg until smooth.
- Using a fork, stir sour cream mixture into flour mixture until large dough clumps form. Use your hands to press the dough against the bowl into a ball. (The dough will be sticky in places, and there may not seem to be enough liquid at first, but as you press, the dough will come together.)
- Place on a lightly floured surface and pat into a 7- to 8-inch circle about 3/4-inch thick. Sprinkle with remaining 1 tsp. of sugar. Use a sharp knife to cut into 8 triangles; place on a cookie sheet (preferably lined with parchment paper), about 1 inch apart. Bake until golden, about 15 to 17 minutes. Cool for 5 minutes and serve warm or at room temperature.

SIMPLE GOLDEN RAISIN SCONES
This is a recipe that I adapted from one that I found in one of my old cookbooks. It's amazingly easy to make and it tastes so good for being decently low fat. My father (who is British) insists on me making them for him whenever I visit. These are fantastic reheated in the microwave for a few seconds with some whipped cream on the side or spread with butter. Edit: Ahh - I forgot to add the amount of flour needed in the ingredients. Thank you for the review that pointed it out Beansy!

MUM'S SIMPLE ECONOMY SCONES
I learned how to make these when I was a little girl. After looking at other more complex recipes, involving eggs and cream, I thought there might be space for mine. All you need is self- rising flour, butter and milk, and Hey Presto! You have afternoon tea or a snack.

SIMPLE SWEET SCONES
My family loves these scones! In our household this is a go to recipe for a weekend or holiday treat. It's a biscuity style scone, not cakey/ dense or gummy like you get now in many coffee shops. My then 16 year old daughter posted this when she first discovered Recipezaar, it's now 11 years and over 100 5 star reviews later;...

Steps:
- First preheat oven to 425°F.
- Then take out a large baking sheet and grease it; set it aside.
- In a large bowl, you will need to combine your flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and allspice.
- Cut your butter into flour mixture with pastry knife (or a fork if you don't have one - you can even use your hands) making sure to cut it through until it looks crumbly.
- Now you will need to make a well in the center of this mixture and add the milk.
- Beginning stirring mixture, then add your blueberries, and finish stirring until dough forms.
- If you feel that it is not forming well, you can always add a tiny bit of milk to make it all come together, but be careful not to add much more milk, and do NOT overwork the dough.
- Now you must form the dough into one large round (like a ball), and flatten it out into a 10 inch disk.
- With a sharp knife, cut the dough into 10 wedges; you can do so by cutting it exactly as you would cut a pie!
- Slide disk of scone wedges on to baking sheet sheet (not necessary to separate at this time). Brush tops with cream, and sprinkle sugar over the cream.
- Bake scones for 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Remove from baking sheet when done, and cut the wedges where you made your cuts earlier.
- Serve warm with my blueberry sauce or with butter and honey!
- You can even eat them plain!
