3 medium Gala or Fuji apples, peeled and finely chopped
1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts, toasted
2 tablespoons sweet red wine or grape juice
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Matzo crackers, optional

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, toss apples and walnuts with wine. Mix sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over apple mixture and toss to combine., Refrigerate, covered, 1 hour before serving. If desired, serve with matzo crackers.

A simple recipe for this traditional Passover staple. I always make a great deal extra to munch on for days! Mixture will turn the appropriate shade of brown to look like the mortar which it represents. You can substitute sugar for the honey, if desired.

2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and coarsely grated
1 cup walnuts, finely ground
2 tablespoons grape juice
2 teaspoons honey
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Mix apples, walnuts, grape juice, honey, and cinnamon together in a bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate until chilled, 8 hours to overnight.

I have been making this charoset since my first Passover. Even the kids love it!

2 apples, cored and quartered
3 bananas, broken into chunks
1 cup dates, pitted
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 orange, zested and juiced
lemon, zested and juiced
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons white sugar
⅓ cup dry red wine
2 tablespoons matzo meal, or as needed

Steps:

  • Blend apples, bananas, dates, walnuts, orange zest and juice, lemon zest and juice, cinnamon, and sugar in a food processor until chunky. Transfer apple mixture to a bowl and stir in wine. Gradually stir matzo meal into apple mixture, adding enough to soak up the wine; chill in refrigerator.
