This recipe if from one of my Grand mothers recipe book. She put lots of love in this cake when she made it.

Steps:
- Mix vinegar and soda, set aside. Cream sugar with shortening and add eggs. Make a paste of cocoa and food color and add to creamed mixture.
- Add buttermilk,salt, and flour alternately. Add vanilla then soda and vinegar.
- Beat well and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes in two well oiled and floured pans. Cool and split each layer to make 4 thin layers
- FROSTING PART 1: Cook over low flame until thickened, remove from heat and add 1 stick butter. Chill mixture.
- FROSTING PART 2: Add to first part and beat at high speed until fluffy. Ice after putting layers together. Garnish with Coconut.
