This is my recipe for a smooth, delicious and not too heavily spiced apple butter. If you like more spice flavor, you may double the ground cloves, allspice and/or nutmeg.

Steps:
- Process apple chunks, in batches, in food processor until finely chopped, emptying each batch into bowl of slow cooker.
- Set slow cooker on "high," then add all remaining ingredients; stir until well combined.
- Place lid on slow cooker; cook on high for 6 hours, stirring every hour or so. (May cook on low overnight, if desired.)
- Apple butter should be brown and thick. For perfectly smooth apple butter, use immersion blender when it's finished cooking..
- To can, immediately ladle into hot, sterilized jars; place sterilized lids on jars and screw on rings; process in boiling water bath 10 mins.
- To freeze, ladle mixture into a large bowl, cover and refrigerate until mixture is cold (I let it chill overnight,) then spoon into small freezer containers or freezer bags.
