Grandma Barb's Caramelized Apple Crisp image

This recipe came from my Grandma Barb, and it's the only apple crisp recipe I will make. The addition of a simple syrup over the top of the apples gives this special crisp a caramelized consistency that really makes it stand out.

9 baking apples, peeled, cored and cubed
2 c all-purpose flour
1 1/2 c quick oats
2 c brown sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
3/4 tsp salt
1 c butter or imperial margarine, melted (i use margarine)
2 c karo syrup
1 tsp vanilla
4 Tbsp cornstarch

Steps:

  • 1. Mix flour, quick oats, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a medium bowl. Add melted butter and mix until crumbly.
  • 2. Press 2/3 of mixture in bottom of a greased 9x13 pan or baking dish.
  • 3. Layer cubed apples over the oat mixture.
  • 4. In a medium saucepan, stir together Karo syrup, vanilla and cornstarch until well-combined. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it comes to a boil. Stir and cook another minute. Pour the heated syrup mixture over the apples in the baking dish.
  • 5. Sprinkle the remaining topping mixture over the top.
  • 6. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes.
