Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Pour the condensed milk into a 9-inch (23-cm) glass or nonreactive metal pie plate, or a similar-sized baking dish and sprinkle the salt over it. Cover snugly with foil and set the baking dish within a larger pan, such as a roasting pan. Add hot water until it reaches halfway up the side of the pie plate.
- Bake for 1 to 1 1/4 hours, checking a few times during baking and adding warm water to the roasting pan if it needs more. Once the milk is the color of dark butterscotch, remove it from the oven. Remove the foil and let it cool to room temperature, then whisk until smooth.
- Storage
- This sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 months. Rewarm it gently in a microwave or by stirring in a saucepan over very low heat. If it seems too thick, you can thin it with a small amount of milk.
