Chocolate Stripe Cake image

From my mother-in-law's recipe collection.

1 package(s) 18.25 ounce white cake mix
1 - envelope unflavored gelatin
1/4 cup(s) cold water
1/4 cup(s) boiling water
1 cup(s) chocolate syrup
- whipped topping
- chocolate syrup (optional garnish)

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350. Grease and flour 13x9x2 inch baking pan. Prepare cake batter and bake according to package directions. Cool 15 minutes. Do not remove cake from pan. With fork, carefully pierce cake to bottom of pan, making rows about 1 inch apart covering length and width of cake.
  • In small bowl, sprinkle gelatin over cold water; let stand 1 minute to soften. Add boiling water; stir until gelatin is completely dissolved and mixture is clear. Stir in 1 cup syrup. Pour chocolate mixture evenly over cooled cake, making sure entire top is covered and mixture has flowed into holes. Cover; chill about 5 hours or until set. Serve with whipped topping; garnish with syrup, if desired. Refrigerate leftovers.
