Chicken with Asian-Style BBQ Sauce image

Sweet and spicy barbecued chicken

2/3 cup(s) plum sauce or sweet and sour sauce
1/4 cup(s) hoisin sauce
2 tablespoon(s) soy sauce
2 tablespoon(s) honey
2 tablespoon(s) water
1 1/2 teaspoon(s) sesame seeds
1 clove(s) garlic, minced
1 teaspoon(s) fresh ginger, grated
3/4 teaspoon(s) oriental chili sauce or bottled hot sauce
1/4 teaspoon(s) 5-spice powder
2 1/2 - 3 pound(s) chicken, cut into serving pieces

Steps:

  • For the sauce: Combine all ingredients (except chicken) in a small saucepan over medium heat until bubbly - stir frequently. Reduce heat and cover - simmer another 5 minutes and then set aside.
  • Remove skin from chicken, if preferred. Place chicken, meat side down, on grill over medium heat. Grill for 20 minutes. Turn chicken and grill for 20-30 minutes more or until 170 degrees (breasts) and 180 (thighs). Remove some sauce for basting and baste chicken during the last 10 minutes.
  • Transfer chicken to a serving platter. Heat remaining sauce and serve on the side.
