Cabbage Au Gratin image

This is an unusual recipe for a cabbage dish. Whenever I serve it to guests, they always compliment the cook.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 medium cabbage, coarsely sliced
1 tsp salt
3 Tbsp butter
3 Tbsp flour
3/4 c milk
11 1/2 c grated cheddar cheese
1/2 c fine dry bread crumbs
2 tsp butter, melted

Steps:

  • 1. Cook cabbage for seven minutes. Drain and save the water.
  • 2. Melt butter and blend into it the flour and add the salt. Gradually add milk and 3/4 cup water from the cabbage. Stir constantly until the sauce boils and thickens.
  • 3. Place a layer of cabbage in a buttered casserole, top with part of the sauce. Sprinkle with the cheese. Repeat with all the ingredients ending with the cheese.
  • 4. Mix bread crumbs with the remaining butter and sprinkle over the casserole. Bake in 350* oven 20 - 25 minutes.
