Baklava Roll-ups image

These are nice to have around over the Holidays, they last a long time..they aren't hard to make either. I can't remember where I found this recipe, but I am so glad I did. I made it a tradition to make these every Christmas, and my kids love to help.

Time 55m

Number Of Ingredients 16

SYRUP
1 1/4 c sugar
3/4 c water
1 Tbsp lemon juice
3 tsp cinnamon
1 Tbsp honey
pinch of ground cloves
FILLING
1 lb ground walnuts - a food processor works well for this
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp cinnamon
2 egg whites
PHYLLO
1 lb phyllo dough
1 c melted butter
powdered sugar, for dusting

Steps:

  • 1. Simmer all syrup ingredients in a small saucepan for 15 minutes and cool. Beat egg whites till they have soft peaks and mix in filling ingredients and half of the prepared syrup.
  • 2. Cut phyllo sheets in half. Brush butter between each layer of dough. Take a stack of 8 layers of dough and spread filling on it, then roll up. Slice the roll to desired lengths and make a few tiny slits on the tops of the rolls
  • 3. Brush them with remaining butter and bake at 350F for 25 minutes. I bake these on a jelly roll sheet pan. Pour the rest of the syrup over the rolls once they are out of the oven. After they cool, dust with powder sugar.
