No butter, just oil in this recipe that delivers a rich, chewy, and chocolate-y cake in about an hour.

2 cups white sugar
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups water
1 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a large bowl, mix sugar, flour, baking soda, salt and cocoa.
  • Add water, vegetable oil, vinegar, and vanilla. Beat by hand until smooth.
  • Pour into a 9x13 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 40 minutes, or until toothpick inserted into center of cake comes out clean.

The best chocolate cake you will ever eat. Do not skip cooking the frosting or it changes the whole cake

2 c sugar
2 c all purpose flour
1/2 c cocoa powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 eggs
1 c vegetable oil
1 c soured milk (add 1 tsp. vinegar to milk)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 c boiling water
FROSTING
1/2 c butter
1/4 c cocoa powder
6 Tbsp milk
4 c powdered sugar

Steps:

  • 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 9x13 cake pan.
  • 2. In a large mixing bowl combine sugar, flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Add the rest of the ingredients for the cake. Beat for 2 minutes at medium speed
  • 3. Pour into prepared pan, and bake 35 - 40 minutes until done.
  • 4. When cake is almost done baking prepare frosting. Heat butter, cocoa, and milk to boiling. Pour over powdered sugar and mix well.
  • 5. Allow cake to cool for about 10 minutes. Poke small holes in the cake, I use the end of a wooden spoon, then frost the cake while still warm.
