This recipe goes back a long time, sliced apples, with French vanilla flavoring over them, topped with soft crust, this is really good! For the top crust I like to add in some cinnamon, but that is optional!

7 cups peeled and sliced apples
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon (or a mixture of all three, as long as the total is 2 tsp) or 2 teaspoons nutmeg (or a mixture of all three, as long as the total is 2 tsp)
1 (3 ounce) package French vanilla instant pudding
1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup milk (or use half and half cream)
1 egg, slightly beaten

Steps:

  • Set oven to 350 degrees,.
  • Butter a 13 x 9-inch baking dish (can use an 11 x 7-inch baking dish).
  • In a bowl mix together the sliced apples with 1-1/2 cups sugar and the spices.
  • Transfer to the bottom of baking dish and spread evenly.
  • Sprinkle the dry vanilla pudding powder evenly over top of apple mixture.
  • In a bowl stir together 1 cup sugar (can use more) flour, milk, oil and egg; pour this mixture over the dry pudding and apples.
  • Bake for about 30 minutes or until apples are fork-tender.

1 cup packed brown sugar
1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour, divided
1/2 teaspoon salt, divided
1 cup water
1 teaspoon lemon juice
2 teaspoons baking powder
5 tablespoons butter, divided
3/4 cup 2% milk
5 cups sliced peeled apples
1/2 teaspoon plus 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon coarse sugar
Whipped cream, optional

Steps:

  • In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, 1/4 cup flour and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add water and lemon juice; cook and stir over medium heat until thick. Cover and set aside. , In a bowl, combine baking powder and remaining flour and salt. Cut in 3 tablespoons butter. Add the milk and mix just until moistened (a few lumps will remain); set aside. , Arrange apples in a 1-1/2-quart baking dish; sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Add nutmeg, vanilla and remaining butter to sauce; pour over apples. Drop dough by spoonfuls over sauce. Combine remaining cinnamon and coarse sugar; sprinkle over dough. Bake at 350° until top is brown and apples are tender, about 55 minutes. Serve warm, with whipped cream if desired.

1 quart apple pie filling, Apple Pie Filling
1/2 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup butter
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon baking powder

Steps:

  • Open 1 jar apple pie filling and put in baking dish.
  • Mix oatmeal, brown sugar, flour, baking soda and baking powder together and cut butter into the mixture.
  • Put crumbs on top.

3 c chopped raw apples (use your favorite variety, granny smith is a good choice)
1/2 c sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
TOPPING
3/4 c rolled oats
3/4 c brown sugar
1 egg
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 c flour
1/2 c melted butter

Steps:

  • 1. Combined apples, sugar and cinnamon. Place in a greased 9 x 9 or 8 x 8 dish.
  • 2. Combine oats, brown sugar, egg, baking powder, flour and melted butter. Sprinkle over apple mixture.
  • 3. Bake 1 hour at 300 degrees. During last 15 minutes, you can sprinkle 1/2 cup nuts over top. Serves 6.
