These hearty sandwiches are filled with ground beef, marinara sauce, garlic, and Italian herbs - topped with melty provolone cheese.

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 onion (diced)
1 pound lean ground beef
8 ounces marinara sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
4 slices provolone cheese
4 brioche buns (lightly toasted)

Steps:

  • In a sauté pan over medium heat, add olive oil. When hot, add onions and cook until they begin to lightly brown, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Crumble ground beef into pan and cook until browned, about 5 minutes. Optionally, drain any excess grease from the pan at this time.
  • Add marinara sauce, tomato paste, worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and red pepper flakes. Stir to combine. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until ingredients are heated through and sauce has thickened to your liking. Top with cheese slices and remove from heat.
  • Once cheese has melted, transfer sloppy joe mixture onto toasted buns and serve.

My friend Ginny shared this recipe with me 15 years ago and it has become a Super Bowl staple. It puts a spin on the traditional "Sloppy Joe" by using Hot Sausage instead of Ground Beef. My daughter makes this recipe and throws in kidney beans to use as a chili recipe.

2 lbs loose hot sausage
1 tablespoon oil
3 medium onions, diced
2 medium green peppers, diced
1 (6 ounce) jar sliced mushrooms
1 (26 ounce) jar ragu pasta sauce with meat
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
2 tablespoons parsley
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon oregano
16 kaiser rolls

Steps:

  • Fry loose sausage in a large frying pan over medium heat until meat looses its pink.
  • Drain meat and place in a 2 1/2 quart slow cooker.
  • Saute peppers and onions in oil until tender.
  • Add pepper/onion mixture to slow cooker.
  • Add the remaining ingredients with the exception of the Kaiser rolls to the slow cooker.
  • Stir the ingredients throughly.
  • Cover and cook on high setting for 1 hour.
  • Slice the rolls lengthwise.
  • Spoon the"Sloppy Joe" mixture on to the bottom half of the roll and top with the remaining half.

1 lb ground beef chuck
2 links Italian pork sausage, casing removed
1 cup finely chopped onions (2 medium)
1/2 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
3/4 cup finely chopped mushrooms
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 1/3 cups marinara sauce
2/3 cup barbecue sauce
4 large burger buns, split

Steps:

  • Heat 10-inch skillet over medium heat. In large bowl, mix together beef and pork; add to skillet. Add onions, bell pepper, mushrooms, garlic, salt and pepper; mix well. Cook, stirring frequently, until beef and pork are no longer pink and vegetables until tender.
  • Stir in marinara and barbecue sauces. Heat to boiling. Reduce heat to medium-low to low; simmer 10 to 15 minutes or until thickened.
  • Serve beef-pork mixture in buns.

1 lb bulk hot Italian sausage
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 cup chopped green pepper
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon fennel seed
salt and pepper
8 -10 submarine rolls, split
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat, cook sausage, garlic, green pepper, and onion until the sausage is no longer pink; drain.
  • Add the tomato sauce and seasonings; bring to a boil.

3/4 cup onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 red bell pepper, chopped in 1/2-inch pieces

1 tablespoon rosemary, finely chopped

Steps:

  • In a medium non-stick skillet, cook the sausage over medium-high heat, breaking up as it cooks into small bits until cooked through, about 5-6 minutes. 1 jar(s) marinara sauce, 24 oz.
1 lb ground beef
1 lb Italian sausage, hot or mild
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 tsp oregano
1/4 tsp crushed red pepper
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 pkg hamburger buns
sliced mozzarella or provolone cheese
sliced pepperoni

Steps:

  • 1. Heat a large deep pan over medium heat, then add olive oil. If you are using the link sausage remove the skin and crumble into pan.
  • 2. Cook meat and drain of fat. Put meat back into pan after draining and reduce heat to low.
  • 3. Pour marinara over meat. Add oregano and red pepper; stir. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until you have a nice thick consistency. Taste for seasoning and adjust as you like.
  • 4. Put pepperoni and cheese on the bun.
  • 5. Scoop desired amount of meat onto bun and serve.

1 pound bulk Italian sausage
1 medium sweet red pepper, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef (90% lean)
2 cans (8 ounces each ) no-salt-added tomato sauce
1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon liquid smoke, optional
16 slices smoked mozzarella cheese (about 3/4 pound)
8 hoagie buns, split and toasted
Pickled hot cherry peppers, optional

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook and crumble sausage with red pepper and onion over medium-high heat until no longer pink, 5-7 minutes. Transfer to a 3- or 4-qt. slow cooker., In same pan, cook and crumble beef over medium-high heat until no longer pink, 5-7 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, add beef to slow cooker. Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, garlic powder and, if desired, liquid smoke. Cook, covered, on low until flavors are blended, 4-5 hours., To serve, place cheese on bun bottoms; top with meat mixture and, if desired, peppers. Close sandwiches.
