Inspired by the Hostess® favorite, the Ho Ho Cake features layers of cake and cream filling topped with chocolate.

1 (9 ounce) package chocolate cake mix
5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 ¼ cups milk
1 cup white sugar
½ cup margarine
1 cup shortening
½ cup margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg
1 ½ teaspoons hot water
3 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
1 ¾ cups confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • Prepare and bake cake as directed on the package for a 9 x 13 inch pan. Cool completely.
  • Combine flour and milk in saucepan. Cook, stirring constantly, until thick. Cool completely. Cream 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup margarine, and shortening. Add cooled milk mixture, and beat well. Spread over cake. Refrigerate.
  • In a small bowl, beat egg. Stir in vanilla, melted chocolate, hot water, confectioner's sugar, and 1/2 cup margarine. Pour over second layer. Refrigerate.

This recipe was given to my by a coworker and we have made it several times and it was always a hit.

2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 cup margarine, melted
1/2 cup oil
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup buttermilk
4 cups powdered sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup milk
1 cup Crisco
1 tablespoon water
1/2 cup sugar
6 tablespoons margarine
6 tablespoons milk
3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Cake:.
  • Mix first 5 ingrediants, add remaining ingredients and beat well. Pour into greased Jelly Roll Pan (I usually just use a 9/13 glass cake pan). Bake at 350 deg for 15-20 minutes.
  • Filling:.
  • Beat together 1 cup powdered sugar and all remaining ingredients for 5min. Add 1-3 cups more powdered sugar (a little at a time until you get the consistency you want) and beat well. Spread onto cooled cake layer. Put in freezer while you make the frosting.
  • Frosting:.
  • Boil together sugar, margarine, and milk for 1 1/2 minutes. Remove from heat and add chocolate chips and vanilla. Beat until cooled and slightly thickened. Spread over filling layer and let stand until frosting cools and sets.
  • Best if kept chilled.

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
2/3 cup sugar, divided
2/3 cup shortening
1/3 cup butter, softened
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Dash salt
2 prepared 9-inch round chocolate cakes
GLAZE:
1/4 cup butter, cubed
1/4 cup baking cocoa
3/4 cup confectioners' sugar
2 to 4 tablespoons milk

Steps:

  • For filling, in a small saucepan, combine flour and milk until smooth; stir in 1/3 cup sugar. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. , Transfer to a large bowl; cool. Beat in the shortening, butter, vanilla, salt and remaining sugar until smooth. Spread between cake layers., For glaze, melt butter and cocoa in a small saucepan. Whisk in confectioners' sugar and enough milk to achieve a drizzling consistency. Drizzle over top of cake, allowing some to drape down the sides.

1 (18 1/4 ounce) box chocolate fudge cake mix
3 eggs
1/2 cup oil
5 tablespoons flour
1 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup margarine
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup margarine, melted and cooled to room temperature
1 egg
3 ounces semisweet chocolate, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • Grease a 10 1/2-by-14-by-2-inch pan and set aside.
  • Prepare cake mix as instructed on the box using the egg and oil.
  • Spread into reserved pan and bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 20 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and place pan on a wire rack and let cake cool completely in the pan.
  • Prepare filling: Place flour in a small saucepan.
  • Slowly add milk, stirring until mixture is smooth.
  • Place pan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until mixture is thick, about 10 minutes.
  • Place flour-mixture in a bowl, cover surface with plastic wrap and refrigerate until cool, about 2 hours.
  • In a bowl of an electric mixer, combine the cooled flour mixture, margarine, vegetable shortening and sugar.
  • Beat on high speed until light and fluffy, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Spread evenly over top of cake and chill until filling is somewhat firm, about 2 hours.
  • Prepare icing: In a large bowl of an electric mixer, combine melted margarine, egg, melted chocolate, 2 1/2 tablespoons hot water and vanilla.
  • Beat on medium speed until blended.
  • Slowly add confectioners' sugar, beating until smooth.
  • Smooth icing over cake, taking care not to disturb the filling.
  • Chill until ready to serve.
