2 thick slices orange, plus more for garnish
Ice
1/8 teaspoon chipotle juice (from canned chipotle)
1-ounce fresh lime juice
1 1/2 ounces tequila (recommended: Tequila Reposado 100 percent blue agave)
1/2-ounce premium orange-flavored liqueur (recommended: Cointreau)
3/4-ounce simple syrup (equal amounts sugar and water heated until the sugar dissolves; cool)

Steps:

  • In a cocktail shaker, muddle orange slices with ice, chipotle juice and lime juice. Add more ice, tequila, orange liqueur, and simple syrup. Shake and strain into a glass filled with ice. Serve garnished with an orange slice.

  • Muddle 4 thick orange slices, 1/4 teaspoon adobo sauce (from canned chipotle peppers) and 2 ounces lime juice in a cocktail shaker. Add 3 ounces tequila, 1 ounce orange liqueur and 11/2 ounces simple syrup. Fill with ice and shake. Strain into 2 glasses filled with ice; garnish with orange slices.

Chipotle Grapefruit Margarita image

1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon chipotle powder
2 ounces fresh grapefruit juice
2 ounces silver tequila
1 ounce orange liqueur
1 small pinch chipotle powder
2 grapefruit wedges

Steps:

  • For the chipotle salt: Mix together the salt and chipotle powder on a plate.
  • For the margarita: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the grapefruit juice, tequila, orange liqueur and chipotle powder. Cover and shake until mixed and chilled, about 30 seconds. (In general, the drink is ready by the time the shaker mists up.)
  • Moisten the rim of a chilled rocks glass with one of the grapefruit wedges and press the rim into the chipotle salt. Strain the margarita into the prepared glass and garnish with the remaining grapefruit wedge.
