Great recipe for a chili burger with all the chili flavor right in the patty. Top it off like nachos and you have a truly delicious burger. I also have this original posted on about.com.

Number Of Ingredients 14

3 lbs ground round or 3 lbs sirloin
1 small onion
3 tablespoons chili powder (more or less to suit your tastes)
1 tablespoon cumin
1 tablespoon lime juice
1 tablespoon beer (optional) or 1 tablespoon sangria (optional)
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon oregano
refried beans
onion, chopped
jalapeno pepper
cilantro, chopped
nacho cheese
salsa

Steps:

  • Mix ground beef, onion, chili powder, cumin, lime juice, beer or Sangria, garlic and oregano together in a bowl.
  • Shape into 12 patties.
  • Grill over hardwood coals (I use lump charcoal, better flavor than if you use smoke chips) until done to your preference.
  • Serve on hamburger buns or hard rolls with your choice of toppings.

1 pound ground beef
1 can (15 to 16 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed tomato soup, undiluted
1 cup chopped celery
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
12 hamburger buns, split

Steps:

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, brown beef; drain. Add beans, soup, celery, green pepper, onion, ketchup, brown sugar and seasonings; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Serve on buns.

Sausage and chili sauce add to the usual ground beef to make a great consistency and flavor for burgers.

1 ½ pounds ground beef
½ pound Italian sausage
⅓ cup tomato-based chili sauce
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat a grill for high heat. When the grill is hot, lightly oil the grate.
  • In a medium bowl, mix together the ground beef, Italian sausage, chili sauce, salt and pepper. Form 8 balls out of the meat, and flatten into patties.
  • Grill patties for 5 minutes per side, or until well done. Serve on buns with your favorite toppings.

Give grilled burgers an extra jolt of flavor without a lot of fuss with pepper-flecked Jack cheese and a bit of spicy seasonings.

1 lb lean (at least 80%) ground beef
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne), if desired
4 slices onion
Cooking spray or vegetable oil
4 burger buns, split
4 slices (1 oz each) hot pepper Monterey Jack cheese

Steps:

  • Heat gas or charcoal grill. In medium bowl, mix ground beef, chili powder and ground red pepper. Shape mixture into 4 (4-inch) patties, 1/2 inch thick. Spray both sides of onion slices with cooking spray or brush with oil.
  • When grill is heated, place patties and onion slices on gas grill over medium heat or on charcoal grill over medium coals; cover grill. Cook 11 to 13 minutes, turning patties and onion slices once, until thermometer inserted in center of patties reads 160°F. During last 2 minutes of cooking, place buns, cut sides down, on grill and cheese on patties; cook 1 to 2 minutes or until buns are golden brown and cheese is melted.
  • Place patties on bottom halves of buns. Top with onion slices. Cover with top halves of buns.
