Yield Makes about 20 cookies

2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup walnuts, toasted, cooled, and finely chopped
About 1/2 cup seedless blackberry or raspberry jam
Garnish: confectioners sugar for dusting

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F with rack in middle.
  • Blend together butter, sugars, vanilla, and 3/4 teaspoon salt in a bowl with a fork. Stir in flour and nuts (dough will be sticky).
  • Form level tablespoons of dough into balls (total of 40) and arrange 2 inches apart on 2 ungreased large baking sheets. Flatten balls to 1/3 inch thick using bottom of a glass dipped in flour. Bake, 1 sheet at a time, until edges are golden, about 20 minutes. Cool cookies on sheets 5 minutes, then transfer to racks to cool completely.
  • Spoon 1 teaspoon jam onto flat sides of 20 cookies, then sandwich with remaining cookies.

1/2 cup slivered almonds
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup seedless blackberry preserves

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F. Spread almonds in ungreased shallow pan. Bake uncovered 6 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until light brown. Cool. Reduce oven temperature to 325°F. Line cookie sheets with cooking parchment paper.
  • In food processor, place almonds. Cover; process 30 seconds or until finely ground.
  • In large bowl, beat butter with electric mixer on medium speed until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating well.
  • In medium bowl, mix flour, salt, cloves, cinnamon and almonds; gradually add to butter mixture, beating until blended. Shape dough into 3/4-inch balls. On cookie sheets, place balls 2 inches apart. Press thumb into each ball, forming indentation.
  • Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until edges are light golden brown. Cool 2 minutes; remove from cookie sheets to cooling racks. Cool 30 minutes. Spoon preserves into resealable freezer plastic bag; seal bag. Cut off tiny corner of bag; squeeze bag to pipe preserves into indentation in each cookie.

These are my favorite (non-chocolate) cookies. They are soft, chewy, and delicious. My family has been making them for the holidays for years. I have no idea where the recipe came from, but I'm glad I have it!

1 cup white sugar
¾ cup firmly packed brown sugar
½ cup butter, softened
¼ cup milk
2 tablespoons orange juice
1 egg
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon baking soda
2 ½ cups cranberries, halved
1 cup chopped walnuts
¼ cup confectioners' sugar for dusting, or as needed

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a baking sheet.
  • Cream white sugar, brown sugar, and butter together in a large mixing bowl. Beat milk, orange juice, and egg into the creamed mixture.
  • Sift flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and baking soda together in a separate bowl; blend into the wet ingredients in the mixing bowl to form a cookie dough. Stir cranberries and walnuts into the dough.
  • Drop the dough onto the prepared baking sheet by the teaspoonful.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the edges are golden, 10 to 15 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 1 minute before removing to a wire rack to cool completely. Sprinkle confectioners' sugar over the cookies to serve.

An easy cookie to make, with the distinctive flavor of black walnuts. It is especially good with a nice cup of tea, or coffee.

1 cup white sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 egg
3 cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped black walnuts

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream butter, white sugar, and brown sugar. Add eggs and beat until smooth. Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir dry ingredients into the creamed mixture until well blended. Stir in walnuts last. Shape dough into logs about 2 inches in diameter, wrap them in wax paper, and refrigerate until firm.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

Another recipe from my grandmother. I usually make these at Christmas as well - trying to create a yearly tradition of baking certain cookies.

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1 cup butter, softened
2 large eggs, beaten well
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 cup black walnut, chopped

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and cream of tarter; set aside.
  • In a large bowl, cream butter, sugar, and brown sugar.
  • Add beaten eggs; mix well.
  • Add dry ingredients; mix well.
  • Fold in black walnuts.
  • Separate dough into 4 parts.
  • Roll each part and pat on ends to make flat.
  • Refrigerate overnight or longer.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Grease a baking sheet.
  • Slice off cookies from the refrigerated rolls and place on prepared cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 5 minutes or until golden light.
  • Cool on wire rack.

2 cups packed brown sugar
2 large eggs, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups chopped black walnuts or walnuts, divided

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture. Stir in 1-1/4 cups walnuts. Finely chop the remaining nuts. , Shape dough into two 15-in. rolls. Roll in chopped nuts, pressing gently. Wrap each in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 2 hours or until firm. , Unwrap dough; cut into 1/4-in. slices. Place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets. Bake at 300° for 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks.
