Provided by Amy | Chew Out Loud

Categories     Appetizer

Time 12m

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 TB regular strength soy sauce
2 TB freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 TB Asian toasted sesame oil (found in the Asian aisle)
2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp granulated sugar
1 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp freshly cracked black pepper
2 to 21/2 lbs fresh ahi tuna steaks (about 1 1/2-1 2/3 inches thick)
oil for cooking
Optional: freshly chopped cilantro (green scallions, sesame seeds for garnish.)
Optional: Sriracha mayo for drizzling

Steps:

  • Marinade: In a bowl, whisk together the first 7 ingredients to make a marinade. Towel dry tuna steaks and place in a glass or ceramic dish. Pour marinade over the fish, turning to coat well throughout. Cover tightly and chill several hours to overnight; turn fish over at least once in the middle of marinade time.
  • Sear: Heat 3 TB oil in a large heavy skillet (aluminum or stainless steel; not nonstick) until oil is smoking. Sear ahi steaks 1 1/2 minutes per side on high heat, taking care to flip carefully with a flat, steel spatula. (If your tuna is less than 1 1/2 inches thick, sear for only 1 minute per side.)
  • Rest/Cool: Transfer seared ahi to a large cutting board and let rest/cool 10 minutes. Use a very sharp (serrated works well) knife to slice thinly across the grain.
  • Serve: Serve chilled or at room temp, over your favorite salad greens or crispy Asian salad. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and cilantro or green onions, if desired. Drizzle with Sriracha mayo if desired.

Valuable Tips When Making Asian Ahi Tuna Panini Recipes

The Asian cuisine is famous for its delicious and unique flavors, which have found their way into many of the contemporary recipes. One of these recipes is the Asian Ahi Tuna Panini, which is a fusion of Asian and Italian cuisines. This sandwich comprises of succulent grilled Ahi tuna, which is spiced with a sublime blend of traditional Asian ingredients. The tuna is then sandwiched between two pieces of bread, along with additional ingredients such as avocado, bean sprouts, and peanut butter, to create an unforgettable flavor experience. Here are some valuable tips that you should consider when making Asian Ahi Tuna Panini recipes:

The Tuna

The quality of the tuna that you use for your panini will determine the flavor and texture of your sandwich. Therefore, it is essential to purchase fresh, high-quality Ahi tuna, preferably from a reputable fishmonger. It is advisable to choose tuna steaks that are at least an inch thick, as these will cook better and avoid overcooking. When grilling the tuna, it is essential to get the grill very hot before you add the fish. This will ensure that the outer layer of the tuna cooks quickly, sealing in the natural juices, and keeping the fish moist and tender. You should also avoid marinating the tuna for too long, as the acidity of the marinade can break down the fish's proteins, making it tough and chewy.

The Spices

The spices used to flavor the tuna play a significant role in the final taste of the panini. The traditional spices used in Asian cuisine include garlic, ginger, soy sauce, and sesame oil. These ingredients will give your tuna a distinctly Asian flavor, but if you would like to add some heat, you can also include some red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper. When seasoning the tuna, it is essential to be conservative with your use of salt, as the soy sauce used in the recipe is already quite salty. As a result, you should consider using low-sodium soy sauce, or reducing the amount of salt used in the recipe.

The Bread

The bread used to make the panini should be appropriate for the recipe. For example, the bread should be sturdy enough to hold the ingredients without falling apart, but not too hard that it is difficult to cut or chew. A good choice would be a freshly baked ciabatta or sourdough bread, as these are flavorful and can withstand the heat of the grill without becoming soggy. When preparing the bread, it is essential to brush both sides with olive oil or butter before grilling, which will help to create a crispy crust on the outside. Additionally, you may want to include some garlic or herbs to add some extra flavor and aroma.

The Additional Ingredients

The additional ingredients you add to the panini will depend on your personal preference, but there are some traditional ingredients that work well with this recipe. For example, avocado, cucumbers, and lettuce are excellent choices, as they add a refreshing taste and a crunchy texture to the sandwich. Another ingredient that works well in this recipe is bean sprouts, as they provide a slightly sweet and nutty flavor, as well as a good source of protein. You can also add a spread of peanut butter or hoisin sauce, depending on the taste you are going for.

Cooking the Panini

When it comes to cooking the panini, a grill or panini press is the best option as they will create the crispy crust and melt the cheese perfectly. However, if you do not have access to these tools, you can also use a regular frying pan or a sandwich press. To cook the panini, heat the grill or panini press to medium heat, then place the sandwich on the grill, and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. If using a frying pan, heat the pan over medium heat and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, pressing down on the sandwich with a spatula.

Conclusion

In summary, the key to making a delicious Asian Ahi Tuna Panini is using fresh and high-quality ingredients and paying attention to the seasoning and cooking process. With these tips in mind, you can create a sensational sandwich that is perfect for any occasion. So don't be afraid to experiment with different flavors and ingredients to create your unique twist on this classic recipe!
