TURKEY CHILI

Turkey Chili image

You might not think of chili as an easy weeknight dish, but this turkey version from Pierre Franey will change your mind. It's fabulous, it's healthy and it can be ready in about a half hour. A combination of dark and white meat really adds depth and richness of flavor, so try to find a mix, but all white meat (or a mixture of ground beef and turkey) will yield a stellar batch too.

Time 35m

Yield 6 servings or more

Number Of Ingredients 18

1 tablespoon olive oil
2 pounds ground turkey, white and dark combined

Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
2 15-ounce cans of red kidney beans, drained
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Ashley's turkey chili is one of the most popular recipes among chili lovers. The dish is not only delicious but also healthy as it is made with lean turkey meat and lots of vegetables. If you want to try making Ashley's turkey chili recipe, here are some valuable tips that will help you make the perfect bowl of chili.

Choose the right ingredients

The key to making Ashley's turkey chili recipe is to use the right ingredients. Make sure that you use lean ground turkey meat as it is healthier and lower in fat than other meats. You can also use canned beans but make sure to rinse them well to get rid of any excess sodium. Use fresh vegetables such as onions, garlic, bell peppers, and celery to add flavor to your chili.
Use a mix of spices
Spices are what give chili its distinctive flavor. Make sure to use a blend of chili powder, cumin, oregano, paprika, and cayenne pepper. You can also add additional spices such as coriander, cinnamon, and allspice to give your chili an extra dimension of flavor.
Sauté the vegetables first
To enhance the flavor of your chili, sauté the vegetables first before adding in the turkey meat. Start by sautéing onions, garlic, and celery in a little bit of oil until they are soft and translucent. Add in the bell peppers and sauté for a few more minutes until they are tender. This will add a depth of flavor to your chili that cannot be achieved by simply adding the vegetables raw.
Brown the turkey meat
Before adding the turkey meat to the chili, make sure to brown it in a separate pan. This will not only give the meat a nice texture but it will also add more flavor to your chili. Once the meat is browned, drain any excess fat and add it to the pot along with the sautéed vegetables.
Don't overcook the chili
One of the most common mistakes that people make when making chili is overcooking it. You want to make sure that the flavors have had time to meld together but you don't want to cook it for too long as the meat and vegetables will become mushy. Simmer the chili for around 30-40 minutes or until it has reached your desired thickness. You can also let the chili sit for a little bit before serving as this will allow the flavors to develop even more.
Serve with toppings
Chili is a dish that is meant to be customized with different toppings. Some popular toppings include shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped green onions, diced tomatoes, and jalapeños. You can also serve it with a side of cornbread or tortilla chips for some added crunch.

Conclusion

Making Ashley's turkey chili recipe is a great way to enjoy a healthy and flavorful meal. By following these valuable tips, you can ensure that your chili turns out perfectly every time. Remember to use fresh ingredients, sauté the vegetables, brown the turkey meat, and don't overcook the chili. And don't forget to serve it with your favorite toppings for a complete meal that everyone will love.
