THE MOST FAMOUS ARABIAN BEVERAGE - QAHWA

The Most Famous Arabian Beverage - Qahwa image

This is "THE MOST" famous after-dinner drink here in the Sultante of Oman. It's really light and is served in traditional Omani homes in a golden/silver jug on a straw mat. I once had a beautiful experience sipping this beverage in a traditional Omani home that had in it this most well-knit family who served from their soul; this is one experience and one drink I always hold close to my heart :)

Arabic coffee, also known as qahwa, is a traditional drink that has been an essential part of Arabian culture for centuries. Qahwa is a brewed drink made from roasted and ground coffee beans. It is usually served in small cups and is considered a symbol of hospitality and socializing. Arabic qahwa recipes differ from other coffee recipes due to their unique blend of spices and herbs. In this article, we will provide valuable tips that will help you make the perfect Arabic qahwa recipe.

Choosing the right beans

The first step in making the perfect Arabic qahwa recipe starts with choosing the right coffee beans. Arabic coffee is usually made from medium to dark roast coffee beans. It is critical to select high-quality beans that are fresh and have not been sitting around for too long. It is ideal to purchase whole beans and then grind them yourself to ensure optimal freshness. If you do not have a grinder, you can purchase pre-ground coffee, but make sure to get it from a reputable source.

Spices and herbs

Arabic qahwa recipes are known for their unique blend of spices and herbs. The most commonly used spices are cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves. Other herbs and spices such as saffron or ginger can also be added for a richer flavor. It is essential to use high-quality spices and herbs that are fresh to experience the full flavor and aroma of the qahwa.
Cardamom
Cardamom is the most commonly used spice in Arabic qahwa recipes. It adds a distinctive flavor and aroma that is considered essential for the perfect cup of qahwa. You can use either green or black cardamom pods, but it is recommended to use green cardamom for a milder flavor and black cardamom for a stronger flavor. The cardamom pods can be crushed or ground before adding them to the qahwa.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon is another popular spice that is commonly used in qahwa recipes. It adds a sweet and spicy aroma to the qahwa and complements the flavor of the coffee. You can use either ground cinnamon or cinnamon sticks to add to the qahwa.
Cloves
Cloves are a powerful spice that should be used in moderation when adding them to the qahwa. They add a sweet and spicy flavor to the coffee and complement the other spices nicely. You can use either whole cloves or ground cloves when making the qahwa.
Saffron
Saffron is a popular herb that is used in Arabic qahwa recipes. It adds a distinct flavor and aroma to the coffee and is considered a luxury spice. Saffron should be added in small portions to avoid overpowering the other flavors.
Ginger
Ginger is another spice that can be added to the qahwa to add a spicy flavor. It is usually grated or finely chopped before adding it to the qahwa. Ginger should be used in moderation to avoid overpowering the other flavors.

Water

Water is a critical factor when making Arabic qahwa. It is important to use cold and fresh water to brew the coffee properly. The water used should be free of impurities and should not have a strong taste or smell. The water to coffee ratio should be around 1:10, meaning one cup of coffee for every ten cups of water.

Brewing methods

There are different methods for brewing Arabic qahwa, and each method produces a unique flavor and aroma. The most commonly used methods are the UAE method and the Saudi Arabian method.
UAE method
In the UAE method, the coffee is brewed in a pot called a dallah. The dallah is usually made of copper or brass and has a long spout for pouring the qahwa. The coffee is brewed over medium heat and is boiled three times. The first two boils are discarded, and the third boil is used for serving. The qahwa is usually sweetened with sugar and served in small cups.
Saudi Arabia Method
The Saudi Arabian method is similar to the UAE method, but the coffee is brewed in a pot called a mihmas. The pot is made of clay and is usually decorated with traditional designs. The coffee is brewed over medium heat, and the first boil is discarded. The second boil is used for serving, and the qahwa is usually sweetened with dates or sugar.

Serving

Arabic qahwa is usually served in small cups called finjan. The finjan cups are usually made of porcelain or glass and are designed to keep the qahwa hot. The qahwa is usually accompanied by dates, sweets, or small snacks. It is customary to serve the qahwa to guests as a sign of hospitality and socializing.

In conclusion, Arabic qahwa recipes are a unique blend of coffee, spices, and herbs that produce a rich and flavorful drink. It is critical to use high-quality beans, fresh spices, and pure water to achieve the perfect cup of qahwa. The brewing methods and the serving of qahwa are important factors that contribute to the overall experience of drinking qahwa.
