GRANDMA'S APPLESAUCE MEATBALLS

Grandma's Applesauce Meatballs image

This is one of my family's favorite 'comfort' foods - by all six generations. Don't let the applesauce scare you off; you can't taste it, but it keeps the meatballs tender and moist. Add mushrooms and/or pearl onions for an even heartier 'comfort' meal! Serve over hot buttered noodles or rice. We like a salad and garlic bread, or a plate of sliced tomatoes and cucumbers. Enjoy!

When choosing the best meat for your applesauce meatballs, it is essential to go for lean cuts as they contain less fat and are therefore healthier. Ground turkey or chicken is a great choice as they are low in calories and fat but still contain enough protein to make the dish satisfying. Beef can also be used but should be the leanest option available.
The Power of Seasoning
Seasoning is crucial for any recipe, and applesauce meatballs are no different. Basic seasonings such as salt, pepper, and garlic are essential in any recipe, but for applesauce meatballs, cinnamon, nutmeg, and all-spice can be added to give the dish that unique sweet and savory taste. You can also add fresh herbs such as parsley or thyme to enhance the dish's flavor and aroma.
The Benefits of Applesauce
As intriguing as it may sound, applesauce plays a vital role in the success of this dish. Applesauce provides a natural sweetness to the meatballs while holding them together without using too much fat or breadcrumbs. Applesauce also adds moisture to the meatballs, making them tender and juicy. Furthermore, apples are rich in antioxidants and vitamins, making the applesauce meatballs recipe a healthier option compared to traditional meatballs. The addition of applesauce also means fewer calories and less fat, making them an excellent choice for those who are watching their caloric intake.
Preparation Process
The preparation process for applesauce meatballs is relatively simple. Begin by mixing ground meat, breadcrumbs, eggs, applesauce, and the desired seasoning in a bowl. Mix well and let sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the breadcrumbs to absorb the moisture. Using a scoop, form the meatballs into even-sized balls and place them on a baking sheet. Bake the meatballs in the oven at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until they reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees.
Serving Suggestions
Applesauce meatballs are a versatile dish that can be served in many ways. Serve them on toothpicks as an appetizer or as a snack. They also make a delicious sandwich when served with a bun and your favorite toppings such as cheese, lettuce, or tomatoes. Valuable Tips on Making Applesauce Meatballs Recipes

Meatballs are a versatile and delicious dish that can be served as a main course, as an appetizer, or even as a snack. Applesauce meatballs are a popular variation of this dish that adds a sweet and tangy flavor to the savory meatballs. Here are some valuable tips to keep in mind when making applesauce meatballs recipes.
Choose the Right Meat
The first step to making delicious applesauce meatballs is to choose the right meat. Ground beef is a popular choice for meatballs, but you can also use ground pork, turkey, chicken, or even lamb. Keep in mind that leaner meats like ground turkey or chicken may result in drier meatballs, so you may need to add extra liquid or fat to the recipe.
Add Moisture and Binder
To ensure that your applesauce meatballs are moist and tender, you'll need to add some moisture and a binder to the meat mixture. Common ingredients used for this purpose include breadcrumbs, rolled oats, eggs, milk, and grated vegetables like onions or carrots. These ingredients not only add moisture but also help to bind the meatballs together.
Season the Meat Mixture Well
Meatballs can be quite bland if not seasoned properly, so it's important to add enough spices and herbs to the meat mixture. Some classic meatball seasonings include garlic, onion powder, paprika, oregano, basil, and parsley. To add a kick of heat, consider adding red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.
Use Quality Applesauce
Since the applesauce is a key ingredient in this recipe, it's important to use a high-quality applesauce. Look for applesauce that is made from real apples and doesn't contain any artificial sweeteners or flavors. You can also make your own applesauce from scratch using fresh apples, which will give your meatballs an extra dose of flavor.
Mix the Meat Mixture Well
To ensure that your meatballs cook evenly and hold together, it's important to mix the meat mixture well. Use your hands to combine all the ingredients thoroughly, making sure that there are no pockets of dry ingredients. Avoid over-mixing the meat, as this can result in tough meatballs.
Roll the Meatballs Uniformly
When shaping your applesauce meatballs, aim for uniform size so that they cook evenly. A good size for meatballs is about 1-2 inches in diameter. Roll the meatballs gently between your palms, taking care not to pack them too tightly, as this can also result in tough meatballs.
Brown the Meatballs First
For the best texture and flavor, brown the meatballs in a skillet before adding them to the applesauce. This will create a crispy crust on the outside of the meatballs and lock in the flavor. Brown the meatballs in batches, making sure to leave enough space between them so that they have room to cook evenly.
Choose the Right Applesauce Flavor
Applesauce comes in many flavors, from plain to cinnamon to berry. When making applesauce meatballs, consider the flavor of the applesauce you're using and how it will complement the other ingredients. For example, if you're using ground pork, a cinnamon-flavored applesauce might work well. Or if you're using ground beef, a slightly tart applesauce with cranberries might be a good choice.
Serve with the Right Accompaniments
Applesauce meatballs can be served on their own as a main course or as an appetizer, but they also pair well with other accompaniments. Consider serving them with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a green salad. You can also serve them with a dipping sauce, like a sweet and spicy barbecue sauce or a tangy mustard sauce.

Conclusion

Applesauce meatballs are a delicious and easy-to-make dish that's perfect for any occasion. By following these valuable tips, you can ensure that your applesauce meatballs are moist, tender, and packed with flavor. Experiment with different meats, spices, and applesauce flavors to find your perfect recipe.
