Categories     dessert

Time 1h20m

Yield Two 8- to 9-inch crusts

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 cups peeled, sliced baking apples, such as Gravenstein
2/3 cup maple or white sugar
1 tablespoon heavy cream
1 tablespoon rose water
Pastry for twp 9-inch crusts, recipe follows
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup lard
Cold water, as needed
About 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, softened

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  • Slice apples into mixing bowl and add sugar, cream, and rose water, and mix thoroughly, so that rose water will be distributed evenly. Line a 9-inch pie dish with favorite pastry. Fill with apple mixture and cover with top crust in which a few small vents have been slashed for steam to escape. Flute the edges well to keep juice from escaping. Bake in a moderate oven for 50 minutes.
  • In a bowl, rub the flour and lard together. Add enough water to make a dough (not too stiff).
  • On work surface, roll the dough out and spread with some of the butter. Fold over evenly and butter. Make a second fold. Roll out again, being careful not to squeeze the butter out. The layers of dough and butter repeated provide the flakiness of the crust.
  • Use a pinch of ginger in piecrust to eliminate the taste of lard in case it is not fresh.

Valuable Tips for Making Apple Water Recipes

1. Choosing the Right Apples

The first and most important tip for making apple water recipes is to choose the right apples. Apples that are naturally sweet, juicy, and crisp are ideal for this purpose. Some of the best apple varieties for making apple water include Gala, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Pink Lady, and Braeburn. These apples are also more nutritious than other varieties, as they contain higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

2. Freshness is Key

When making apple water recipes, it's important to use fresh apples. Old or overripe apples may have lost some of their sweetness and flavor, which can compromise the taste of the final product. To ensure that you are using fresh apples, check the skin for any signs of wrinkling or discoloration. If the apple feels soft to the touch or has a foul smell, it's best to discard it and choose a fresher one.

3. Properly Clean the Apples

Before using the apples in your recipe, make sure to properly clean them. Apples can sometimes be covered in dirt or pesticides, so it's important to wash them thoroughly. The best way to clean apples is to rinse them under cool, running water and rub them gently with your hands to remove any dirt or residue. You may also choose to soak the apples in a solution of vinegar and water to remove any pesticides or other chemicals.

4. Experiment with Different Flavors

One of the great things about making apple water recipes is that you can experiment with different flavors to create unique and delicious drinks. Some ingredients that pair well with apples include cinnamon, ginger, lemon, honey, and mint. You can also add other fruits, such as berries or citrus fruits, for added flavor and nutrition.

5. Use a Blender or Juicer

To get the most flavor and nutrients out of your apples, it's best to use a blender or juicer. This will help to extract the juice and the pulp from the apples, resulting in a smooth and flavorful drink. If you don't have a blender or juicer, you can still make apple water by slicing the apples thinly and steeping them in water overnight.

6. Balance the Sweetness

While apples are naturally sweet, it's important to balance the sweetness when making apple water recipes. Adding too much sweetener, such as honey or sugar, can cause the drink to become too sweet and overpowering. Instead, try adding a small amount of sweetener and then gradually add more if needed. You can also balance the sweetness by adding lemon juice or other tart flavors.

7. Chill Properly

Apple water is best served chilled, so make sure to chill it properly before serving. You can chill the apple water in the refrigerator or by adding ice cubes to the drink. If you are serving the apple water at a party or gathering, consider serving it in a large glass pitcher filled with ice to keep it cold.

8. Spruce Up Your Presentation

Finally, don't forget to spruce up your presentation when serving apple water. You can add slices of fresh apples, sprigs of mint or rosemary, or even edible flowers for a beautiful and eye-catching display. Serving apple water in clear glass bottles or jars will also showcase the beautiful color of the drink and add to the presentation.

Conclusion

Making apple water recipes is a fun and delicious way to stay hydrated and reap the nutritional benefits of apples. By following these valuable tips, you can ensure that your apple water is refreshing, flavorful, and healthy. Remember to choose the right apples, experiment with different flavors, balance the sweetness, and properly chill and present your drink. Cheers to your health!
