Number Of Ingredients 18

1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour, or more as needed
¾ cup shortening, chilled and cubed
1 teaspoon Diamond Crystal® Fine Sea Salt
6 tablespoons ice-cold water, or more as needed
⅔ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground allspice
⅛ teaspoon ground ginger
⅛ teaspoon Diamond Crystal® Fine Sea Salt
8 Red Delicious apples, peeled and thinly sliced
½ teaspoon lemon extract
2 tablespoons butter, cut in small pieces
1 (11 ounce) package caramels, unwrapped
1 tablespoon water, or more as needed
Vanilla ice cream
Diamond Crystal® Coarse Sea Salt

Steps:

  • Blend flour and 1 teaspoon Diamond Crystal® Fine Sea Salt in mixing bowl. Cut shortening into flour mixture using a pastry blender until it resembles pea-sized crumbs. Sprinkle ice water over the top, 1 tablespoon at a time. Mix gently with a fork after each addition until dough holds together. Divide the dough into 2 pieces; one a little larger than the other. Flatten into round disks, wrap in plastic film, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  • Put apple slices in a large bowl and sprinkle with lemon extract. Combine sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, Diamond Crystal® Fine Sea Salt in a small bowl. Sprinkle sugar mixture over apples and mix to distribute evenly.
  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  • Lightly flour flat rolling surface. Roll out the larger disk until it is 2 inches bigger than the pie plate. Carefully place crust into bottom of pie plate, and press evenly into bottom and sides. Pierce the botton with a fork several times. Fill bottom crust with filling and dot with butter pats.
  • Roll out top crust and carefully place over top. Fold bottom crust edge over top and flute. Cut 2 to 4 slits in top. Cover edges of crust with aluminum foil.
  • Bake for 50 minutes. Remove foil for the last 15 minutes. Cool on rack. Serve warm, if desired.
  • Make topping just before serving. Place caramels in a microwave-safe bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of water. Heat for 1 minute at a time on high stirring after each time until caramels are creamy, but no more than 3 minutes. Add additional water, if needed, to get desired consistency.

2 tablespoons ground cinnamon, divided

  • In a deep-fryer or heavy-bottomed pot, heat enough peanut oil to come halfway up the sides of the pot, to 350 degrees F.
  • Whisk together the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl and reserve.
  • Fry the pies, 3 at a time, in the hot peanut oil until they are golden brown and crisp, about 3 minutes. Transfer the finished pies to a paper towel-lined sheet tray. Once they are cool, toss them in the cinnamon sugar and serve with vanilla ice cream.

Apple pie à la mode is a classic American dessert that combines warm apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The sweetness and creamy consistency of the ice cream perfectly complement the tartness of the apples in the pie. While there are countless variations of apple pie à la mode recipes, the overall concept remains the same. This dessert is perfect for any occasion or simply as a treat to indulge in after a long day.

The Secrets to A Perfect Apple Pie à la Mode:

Making the perfect apple pie à la mode is not as challenging as it may seem. The key is to pay attention to the details to make sure that every element of the dessert is in harmony. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

1. Choose The Right Apples:

Apples are the main ingredient in apple pie, so it is essential to choose the right variety. The best apples for pie are firm, tart, and have a bit of sweetness. If you use apples that are too sweet, your pie will taste cloying, and if they’re too tart, your pie will be sour. Some suitable apple varieties for pie include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, and Jonathan.

2. Get The Perfect Crust:

The crust is equally as important as the filling. A good crust should be flaky, buttery, and perfectly browned. It is important to use chilled butter or shortening and ice-cold water when making the crust. Cold ingredients are essential to create a tender and flaky crust. Don't forget to brush the top of the crust with egg wash to give it a golden-brown finish.

3. Spices Are Important:

Spices are a crucial part of any apple pie recipe. Cinnamon is the most common spice used in apple pies, but nutmeg, cloves, and allspice are also popular. The spice blend is what will give your pie that warm and comforting flavor that so many people love.

4. Topping With Ice Cream:

The whole point of an apple pie à la mode is to top a slice of warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream. It is essential to have a high-quality ice cream to compliment the warm pie. Homemade vanilla ice cream is the best choice, but if you don't have the time, store-bought ice cream will do the trick.

Types of Apple Pie à la Mode:

There are countless variations of apple pie à la mode recipes, and each one has its unique twist. Here are some of the most popular versions:

1. Classic Apple Pie à la Mode:

The classic apple pie à la mode is made with a classic pie crust, a filling made of sliced apples, sugar, butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The pie is baked until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. A scoop of vanilla ice cream is served on top of each slice, giving it the classic apple pie à la mode flavor.

2. Vegan Apple Pie à la Mode:

A vegan apple pie à la mode can be just as delicious as the classic version. Instead of using butter, vegan margarine or coconut oil can be used to make the crust. The filling is made using sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a little bit of cornstarch. To make it vegan, coconut milk can be used instead of regular milk in the ice cream recipe.

3. Dutch Apple Pie à la Mode:

Dutch apple pie à la mode is a variation on the classic apple pie. Instead of a traditional crust, a crumbly topping made of flour, sugar, butter, and cinnamon is used. The apple filling is the same as the classic apple pie. Like the classic version, it is served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

4. Caramel Apple Pie à la Mode:

Caramel apple pie à la mode is a decadent variation on the classic recipe. It is made using a classic pie crust and a filling made of sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Instead of topping it with vanilla ice cream, it is served with a drizzle of warm caramel sauce. This version is perfect for those who like their desserts with a more indulgent flavor.

Conclusion:

Apple pie à la mode recipes are a classic American dessert that has delighted generations of families. Whether you are looking for a comfort food or something fancy to impress your guests, apple pie à la mode is a delicious and satisfying option. By following these tips and trying out the different variations, you can find the recipe that suits your taste best.

Valuable Tips When Making Apple Pie à la Mode Recipes

Apple pie à la mode is a classic dessert that never goes out of fashion. It is a delightful combination of warm, spiced apples, a flaky pie crust, and creamy vanilla ice cream. If you are planning to make an apple pie à la mode recipe, these valuable tips will help you create a memorable dessert that everyone will love.
1. Choosing the Right Apples
The first key to a delicious apple pie is choosing the right apples. Not all apples are created equal when it comes to baking. Some apples are too soft, others are too tart, and some don't hold up well under heat. So which apples should you use for apple pie à la mode? Go for firm, tart apples that hold their shape well during baking. Granny Smith apples are a popular choice because of their crisp, tart flavor. Other good options include Jonagold, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn apples. Avoid using soft, mealy apples like Red Delicious or Golden Delicious.
2. Preparing the Apples
Once you have chosen your apples, the next step is to prepare them. Start by washing and peeling the apples, then core and slice them into uniform pieces. As you slice the apples, place them in a large bowl of cold water with a little lemon juice to prevent browning. After you have sliced all the apples, drain the water, and pat them dry with a clean towel or paper towel.
3. Adding Flavor to the Apples
Apples on their own can be a bit bland, so adding flavor to them is important. One way to do this is by adding spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. These spices work well with the tartness of the apples, giving them a warm, cozy flavor that is perfect for fall. You can sprinkle the spices directly onto the sliced apples or mix them together in a small bowl and toss with the apples.
4. Preparing the Pie Crust
A good pie crust is key to a delicious apple pie à la mode. You can use a homemade pie crust or a store-bought one, whichever is more convenient for you. If you are making a homemade pie crust, be sure to follow the recipe carefully, as pie crusts can be tricky to get just right. For a store-bought crust, you can save time by using a pre-made, refrigerated crust. Just be sure to let it come to room temperature before using it, so it will roll out easily and not break apart.
5. Assembling the Pie
Once you have your pie crust and filling ready, it's time to assemble the pie. Roll out the crust and transfer it to your pie dish, then fill it with the apple mixture. Use a spoon to evenly distribute the apples, making sure they are packed tightly. If you want a lattice top crust, use a sharp knife or pie cutter to create strips of dough, and weave them together over the top of the pie. Otherwise, simply place the top crust over the filling and use a knife to cut several slits in the top to allow the steam to escape.
6. Baking the Pie
Now it's time to bake the pie. Place the pie in the oven and bake at 375°F for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the edges of the crust start to brown too quickly, cover them with strips of foil to prevent burning.
7. Serving with Ice Cream
No apple pie à la mode is complete without a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Before serving the pie, let it cool for a few minutes to set. Then, cut into slices and top each slice with a generous scoop of ice cream. The warm, spiced apples paired with the cool, creamy ice cream is a match made in heaven. It's the perfect dessert for any occasion, from a cozy night in to a Thanksgiving feast.

Conclusion

In conclusion, making an apple pie à la mode recipe requires patience, precision, and attention to detail. By using these valuable tips, you can create a delicious dessert that everyone will love. Remember to choose the right apples, prepare them carefully, add flavor to them with spices, use a good pie crust, assemble the pie correctly, and bake it to perfection. Finally, serve it with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream and enjoy!
